I think that term may be over-used or exaggerated. I've killed quite a few critters, large and small in my time. IMO actual DRT is very rare on big game.

I'd agree. Dead pretty close has been more common for me. DPC. Maybe it'll catch on.

If you can't make 'em DRT maybe you need one of those super duper short magnums.

That is true, but I put a small buck DRT with my muzzleloader last week. Have put two other deer DRT with spine shots. Other than that, they were mostly dead right within 40 or 50 yards, with a couple that went much farther.

I don't really hunt, but when I do it's tree rat. With the shotgun, it's Dead Real fast: with the .22, it's Dead Right There. Actually it's more correctly Dead While Rolling Off The Tree Limb. I like to hit 'em in the "hardware" so their system "crashes" before they do.

I've got a few DRT deers. A couple of head shots and three neck/spine. I've never had one go more than a step or two.

When they go stiff-legged and fall over sideways, that's DRT. If they take only a step or two, maybe thrash around right where they fell, that's pretty much DRT. If they run, even 40 yards, that COULD BE a lost deer, depending on the cover, so no, that ain't DRT.

Most often a deer unaware of the hunter, standing still or walking slowly, and shot in the boiler room COULD end up DRT but not always. Runners (which I don't shoot unless already wounded) usually won't drop that easy unless blown half in two.

DRT is usually attained with a CNS shot. Heart/lung shots see them run at the shot - 25-100 yards depending.

DRT = Del Rio Texas :D At least it did when I worked down there, though I found out some folks in El Paso say it means Down River Trash.

I'm sure they meant it in a good way.

I usually mean it as Down Right There.

Not necessairly dead but not getting up & running either.

That mess I made of the shoulder on my buck didn't kill it (right away) but it certainly wasn't going anywhere while I walked up and put a bullet in its head.
