Welcome to the dark side old man. You'll not find me scoping a pre 64. I would rather send it to Canada. But it does shoot better now. :? We will have to see what Sixgun says about this. It also solves the top eject problem, keep that collar buttoned up in a tree stand. What did Griff say, gonna have to check back.

OK CS, I see now. The rifle was previously d & t 'ed. The guy did do a beautiful job on it. It's just that even though the Scout scope thing is neat, I was always partial to a normal scope......just a personal preference.

My mentor OS.....not sure if I read it right from you but these Pearson scope mounts require no holes to be drilled. The last I heard they are only made for the 94 carbine with the barrel dovetail closer to the receiver than the rifle. I was able to do a little filing to make it fit on a 53 (same as a 92...almost) as the dovetail is close to the receiver, unlike a 92 rifle. Although I have not checked it out yet, I see no reason why it would not fit on a 92 scr.

Gotta check with this Pearson guy. It would be nothing to lengthen the current mount to fit a 94/92 rifle. The 1886 does not have that hole on the upper left/forward area of the receiver to knock out the lever/bolt pin so that's a d&t necessity. (Yea, I did a stupid thing back in 1974.....d&t 'ed an 1886 in 33.)

Ain't easy gettin old....I'm starting to scope guns I never even thought of before. I'm even thinking of scoping the BAR but currently no mount is available for the WW2 version, just their HCAR.---6

At this point in my game of life, I'm scoping my pre 64's.
I'm going to enjoy them in the woods for as many years as I have left to get out there.
The way things are going politically, I don't think the blue hat confiscaters will be at all concerned with separating the pre's from the post's in the melt down pile anyway.

Most definitely will Jerry.
The day that happens, that pre & post 64 issue becomes extremely insignificant :|

On the issue of ammunition. My AE has shot 170 gr Winchester and Federal the best with the edge going to the Federal 1/2"-7/8" @ 100 yds for the best groups with a 4x Weaver.

Do you mean the older guns?

Madis' information was the best available for a long time, but better info has come to light. Madis is up to 4 years off in some cases. The polishing room records that have come to light in the past few years are considered more reliable now.

Those records list 1941 as the year of manufacture of noth the 1,270, xxx and 1,312,xxx rifles which would make them 75 years old.

OS, thanks, I'll take 1941 for my carbine's DOM. That makes it three years younger than me.

You are both old. :-) Not like this 61 from both lists. It is from the first Win catalog I got and was very close to unfired when I encountered it.

OS, I still have my California Winchester 94 30-30. I bought it in a pawn shop in San Francisco in 1958. I was headed for Fort Ord for AIT. The shop owner mailed it to my dad in Michigan and didn't charge me for shipping it. it dates at 1951. It has taken a bunch of deer.

I said very close to unfired.

There was no wear on the bolt from cycling it as there is now after I have worked with it a few days and fired 8 rounds through it. It was pristine as I have seen.

I was referring to mine pictured above Fred.
It was new in it's original box with hang tag when I purchased it a number of years ago.

Weaver K-3 wide.
The one advantage to the side mount is the ability to still use the iron sights.

I love that the scout scope makes my old 32 a hunting rifle again instead of a safe queen it looks like yours is back in business also. Congrats on a nice doe!

Thanks EdinCT ,

I'm definitely loving this setup on this 94.
Though I am thinking about upgrading the scope to a new Leupold scout scope.
That old M8 is nice but it's a little weak in the early morning light gathering department.
When it comes to optics, you get what you pay for.
The new optics have come along way.

I just installed a Pearson mount carrying a Leupold-Gilmore red dot sight. Had planned to put a SightMark open style red dot on there but it was just a little too high. I found I was having to search for the dot. The L-G site at the perfect height, mount the gun, cheek the stock and the dot appears right where you are looking.

(My M8 1987)

When was my Leupold scope manufactured?

Every Leupold scope produced since 1974 will have a letter included in the serial number acting as a date-code. Scopes using a letter as a prefix (the beginning of the serial number) were produced between 1974 and 1992. Scopes using a letter as a suffix (the end of the serial number) have been produced after 1992. On the chart below, you will notice the letters I, O, and Q have been omitted as they are easily mistaken for 1, 0, and 0 respectively.

PREFIX SUFFIX
E = 1974 A = 1993
F = 1975 B = 1994
G = 1976 C = 1995
H = 1977 D = 1996
J = 1978 E = 1997
K = 1979 F = 1998
L = 1980 G = 1999
M = 1981 H = 2000
N = 1982 J = 2001
P = 1983 K = 2002
R = 1984 L = 2003
S = 1985 M = 2004
T = 1986 N = 2005
U = 1987 P = 2006
V = 1988 R = 2007
W = 1989 T = 2008
X = 1990 U = 2009
Y = 1991 V = 2010
