I learned how to drive in a VW van and when my Dad gave me his I sold my Datsun truck. Put curtains on the window and pulled out the center seat, threw in a piece of shag carpet and a folding futon mattress. It became my surf-mobile for dawn-patrol. Loved that van until one day it burst into flames while I was driving home from work.

After that I bought a 65 Mustang GT Fastback but couldn't afford to feed it so sold it and bought a Datsun B210. What an awesomely reliable and fuel efficient cat. Shipped it to the Westcoast and drove it with my new new bride all the way up to Idaho towing a U-Haul trailer back in '81. Great memories.

WOW GRIFF!!! How did you know? That was my wife's first car. She had it when we got married. She learned to drive a stick shift in that car, on the way home from the dealership in WV. I've gone up snow covered mountain roads in that little car while 4WD pick ups were off in the ditch.

The F-10 was the first front wheel drive car Datsun ever made.

Other than their utter lack of power, the VW Westfalia (Westfailure in the Mountains) were great campers.

Blaine ,! here is the bed I mentioned earlier. It is from the Butte County Jail in Oroville. It was given to Me as a Jail door but everything was just wrong to be that. It has a chain on each end that supports the weight when let down and pivot pins on each end. Throw a mattress on this puppy and U got a bed that folds out of the way. It is being used as Yard Art. Can U tell I like Old stuff ?

I'm thinking heavy duty army cot that will fold in the middle and hang on the side of the wall....

I'm liking the idea of a couple big storage batteries in a bank being kept up by a decent PV set up....That was a good idea....If it's not to much, it could also be charged with the hot charging wire from the 7 Pin, with PV back up.....A couple nice folding rockers, my current camp kitchen stuff, some big Rubbermaid Bins, and I'm good for awhile until I hit the lottery

Maybe you could have Bret Michaels pimp your RV.

Have you seen that show :?

Charging a bank of large deep cycle batteries off a car alternator is generally a bad idea. Full size truck/van chassis that already have a pretty high output alternator usually have a much larger single, or two when just for use in ambulance packages. I had a 220A cold rated ambulance alternator on my old F350 for winching, and the newer Super Dutys could be ordered with two, and a special charging/pto console, and that was just for two factory high discharge batteries, not deep cycles. Using a standard alternator as a battery charger for those big deep cycles will shorten it's life considerably, and cost you mileage and headaches if it goes out. Using it to supplement charging that comes primarily from other sources wont hurt. I would also be concerned about warranty on that. You might see if there was a heavier duty alternator that can be retrofit by the dealership.

As someone who lives off the grid and designed and installed alternative energy systems, my recommendation is a small generator and a battery charger to top them off after high usage. Otherwise don't go crazy with your battery bank.

I had a 5th wheel that would charge the two standard deep cycles off the vehicle while running in the same manner as you described, but it would not bring them to a full charge if they were low, or even close.

It's pretty easy to do the math on projected watts of usage and size batteries and PV correctly.
