You can still make pancakes from it but it attracts more deer...

Spring tune-up of our Mammoth saddle jacks to make the trips into town for groceries and other miscellaneous needs. Now if we can just get our Standard jack trained to pack, I can take him along when I make the ride to/from the feed store.
All kidding aside, what with the increasing price of diesel fuel, ...and other potential need for quiet, low profile and inexpensive transport, ...these three donkeys of ours just might come in real handy for us.

I want to see some donkey fotos. Are they "nicer" than mules?
@ OI: If you eat your ten pounds of seed corn you starve next year. Plant the corn and grind the surplus. Then you have ten more pounds of seed and a thousand pounds of tortillas.
that's the theory anyhow
best would be to live somewhere where you can forage wild grains and let them keep you in bannock.

I wouldn't know. Squirrels & chipmunks & such prefer corn and those pesky deer keep eating it all...Don McDowell wrote:Old Ironsights wrote:10lbs of shell corn.Don McDowell wrote:Which will be more useful if things were to really ever collapse, 10 lbs of gold, or 10lbs of flour?

Re: What are you guys doing to prepare for ...
You know Grizz, I've been meaning to post some pics of our saddle Jacks. Thought of doing it in a new post. Need the wife to show me how, and by gum, will see if it can get done tonite. Yeah, ours are pretty nice, about 900 pounds, 141/2 hands or thereabouts, with decent dispositions, really smart, friendly and not stubborn as much as cautious. It's rare one would put someone in a bad situation. If something startles or looks bad to them they just stop, instead of "coming unglued" like most horses I've been around. These "boys" were well trained by and bought from a breeder in Oklahoma. The "final exam", before being put up for sale, is a trip to a WalMart parking lot during business hours. If that don't spook or fluster 'em, not much ever will.
Will work on posting pictures. Stay tuned.

Unfortunately I'm sure the fishy game cops would frown on me leaving one of them down in Rawhide...Don McDowell wrote:OI stop at Z&W and pickup one of those Sweet lix horse tubs, and leave it out somewhere, you'll be amazed at how many deer will be your friends,,,, day after day after day,,,, and the elk are rather fond of them as well.
But I did used to feed a lot of deer... errr... squirrels in the back yard of my old place in Indiana.
Not too many come through "downtown" Lingle though...

Yeh the game cops might take offense to your feed supplement you put out to help those horses grazing in there.
I have seen deer right across the street from Lira's in the late evening.

From the dog pound or the city dump.

They sound cool. It would be nice to have a little diesle stored away for the little tractor. I suppose I might need to go to town sometime. This will do;

My mule is great and is very gentle. Packs very well. I no longer ride him, saving that for the qtr horse

Re: What are you guys doing to prepare for ...
I have two horses and enough gear to outfit them both for riders. I need to work on having a couple more for packing. Plus enough immediate gear for shelter/water/food. That's what I try to keep in mind. In a TEOTWAWKI situation fuel will be gone fairly quick or people will be fighting for it in a hurry. With my horses I can stay clear of the roads and most people. Then it will be the wild west again and every man/woman for themselves until the dust settles to some level.

Re: What are you guys doing to prepare for ...
I agree with the horse statement my mule and qtr horse would/could be used for transportation to and from if need be. Actually considered using the horse now to go to work since I have a short ride but the bicycle is a lot easier and overall quicker than a horse would be. When I had a longer ride, I always carried my bike in the truck and even parked up short of the city and biked in. Though the equines could do the job, here in flat country, I would use a bicycle as a more efficient means of transportation should I not be able to get fuel.

Re: What are you guys doing to prepare for ...
I thought about getting a couple mules or horses. Then my mind throws in a bit of reason and I come to my senses.
A bicycle doesn't eat, goes farther in a day (if you/I can) and doesn't require medications or specialized training if it get's sick. Also doesn't require a bullet if I need to put it down. On the flip side you can't eat it if the zombies make travel impossible.
