Way back in 2002 my Navy pal Tim was totally disgusted with me that I'd never hunted. He grew up hunting in Wyoming, his dad was (and still is) an avid hunter. Me, I grew up target shooting in SoCal but never hunted, my dad wasn't a hunter.
Tim had never been pig hunting, and we discovered that as military guys we could hunt pigs on Vandenburg AFB, so we got started.
On the 3rd trip, he got his first pig. A year later, I got my first pig. Other than that, the many trips have been "armed camping."
Nothing like wandering around in beautiful scenery with a loaded high-power rifle, enjoying the awesome ocean views from the upper hillside .....
For the last 20 years or more all of my shooting has been hunting related. Sure I send lead down the target range but most if not all of it is with the end goal of improving myself, my guns or my loads for hunting. Plinkin and shooting for the joy of it has become a lost art for me. Being said, I still hunt and I still get that fever going when I pull the trigger but the end result is far less important to me. If I don't have game to deal with at the end of the day I'm just as happy. Due to my trapping and coon hunting background critters had always been a numbers game. You judged your season on how many critters you got and how much money you got for em. I've grown a little tired of this and while I still like to coon hunt and may trap again someday I'm happier not worrying about big numbers and just having fun.
I'm also gonna try to recreate myself into more of a plinker. Been toying with long range .22lr shooting on rabid rocks and dirt clods that dot my landscape, thinkin of maybe doing some competitions and am even thinkin of building an ammo burning 10/22 complete with a handful of 25 round mags, something I thought was completely stupid and for wet behind the years youngsters a few years ago.
