I have learned to wear earmuffs always. I use the amplified ones. The M60 I carried for a couple of years took too much of my hearing for me to be willing to lose any more. I have taught my son to use hearing protection always, too. My daughter lost her hearing to ear infections starting about 18 months old and doesn't need any hearing protection.

On the range I always use the electronic type muffs.

Hunting I use nothing. Always wanted some of those Walker Game Ears plugs but always spent the money on ammo or a new gun rather than ear protection when hunting. Sometimes I'll stick my fingers in my ears if the other guy is shooting, but that's about it.

Army ruined my hearing more than hunting ever has, but then I don't believe in Global Warming either.

No ear protection. I need to hear a full normal audio spectrum for safety. When on the target practice line, the environment is controlled and then hearing protection is a definite yes.

I do sometimes use contrast enhancement glasses, especially with low light or haze.
