Big surprise for me came at about 44 when I took my 94 30-30 which I would typically get maybe 1 1/2" to 2 1/2" inches off the bench with at 100 yds and that day got over 9" with. I looked close and was seeing about 3 overlaid targets. I tried shooting the left one, the right one and the center one and that did not work either. I looked at a full moon with either and both eyes and found that the overlaid discs would shift - my eye/eyes would not steadily hold the same pattern. Now the eye muscles are at least partially focused by nerves that go down to the center of the back, exit the spine sending fibers to a ganglion further up which in turn send fibers to muscles that focus the eyes. That is a possibility for loss of focus control. SO, I reluctantly put a 4X old reconditioned Weaver on the 94 and then got groups as small as 3/4" of an inch with a couple of loads. It is still on there. But, I have half a dozen levers without them. I also have four in the long range category with them. Now back to the eyes. More changes have occurred and the right eye is sharper again. And the left which used to be sharper has become fuzzier. So while I used to use my left master in pistol shooting, I now use my right. Time marches on and I adapt in the best way I can. But I also remain enamored with being able to see the magnified target through a scope - didn't get the opportunity to do that until about age 44.

I don't care what Joe shoots with but will likely continue to rise to the bait from time to time when somebody says - dirty low down no good bottom fishing Tim Burris if scopes are mentioned. We used to call Tim that by the way when he took the jackpot with a small for species halibut while the fish cleaning (chumming) was going on beating out my hog of a sand bass. Then later his name got changed to Prince of a Guy and then just Prince. Somehow it then went to Candyass Cityboy and that evolved to -- well you guessed it. :D

Ain't any doubt about it, scopes hold many advantages over irons. Some don't even have a negative when it comes to failing light.

But, for the time being, I like irons. I feel it's more of a challenge; yes, OS, even if I'm shooting at bigger targets! I ain't sure it sentimentality, but a top eject Winchester is a pretty poor base for a scope. Ya gotta drill holes in the sides, defacing one of the rare ~4-½ million examples. For that, ya oughta have a few holes drilled in your side and see how YOU like it! :o

Qman, that's a fine lookin' Marlin. Trade ya wood! While I have one levergun wearing a scope, it ain't the only scoped arm in the safe; yet, while I can be pretty critical, even snide with a comment or two, it ain't even meant as an insult.

I do believe that Joe would make fun of hisself as soon as poke fun at someone else. And like Mr. Lombardi said, "a good defense can only be beat by a better offense." Or something like that. So, sometimes, like driving a car (or truck), being defensive puts you at a distinct disadvantage. You're always havin' to react to what the other fellar does. So... sometimes, it's in your best interests to go on the offensive, anticipate the actions of others, so they have less effect. I, of course, would never poke fun at myself... when others make such easy targets!!!  :P :P

p.s.: I shot it recently (something like 4 or 5 years ago). :P

p.p.s.: Let me know when I can remove my tongue from my cheek!

Griff, I been waiting for you on this :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D but I suspected the stew hadn't simmered long enough :D :D :D :D :D :D :D I would like to know more about that levergun you have there and I think Joe was really saying that it would be cheating for HIM to use a scope. I originally thought he was just wanting to cause a Halloween Trickster stir. :o

It's a 1980 Marlin 375 wearin' a Weaver K4-1 scope on an Uncle Mike's base, IIRC. Sling is original to the gun.

Griff, I believe I have the same rifle. Just bought some 300 gr round nose that I want to experiment with. Mine has a 1.75-6x Leupold in Warne mounts - same year I think.
