GK, I go on a pre-dawn 2 mile hike at 4:30 every morning but I'll have to say that I'm less worried about bears than I am about the mountain lions that my own and other neighborhood cameras have captured. I'll admit that this one was a hefty fellow, the camera is mounted 28" above ground level.

We've got them too. I took this last fall out my living room window and the bear is a little one about 4 feet from my porch.

It's foraging from my neighbor's garbage he inadvertently left by the side of his house.

Like GK says …..must be interesting taking a walk down the driveway after dark……bet you don’t let your dogs wander at night….

I’ve camped out in some wild places dozens of miles from civilization where these creatures roam and you know what puts the most fear into me? ….tiny little bugs like spiders, a swarm of bees or wasps….or even microscopic bacteria…….I know a guy who near died from drinking crystal clear water…… ……..snakes crawling up in your sleeping bag or anywhere near camp. ……earwigs that crawl in your brain and lay eggs….

The little creatures are much more numerous and don’t have a brain that knows fear.

Back when I had my Jack Russell TERROR he treed a youngish bear. I figured this was going to be a learning experience for the bear- I left the dog under that tree barking, gnawing the tree for 4 hours! That bear hung on, it was a good size red oak straight as a string until about 40' up. It just hugged that tree the whole time! Anyhow my dog was hoarse for about a week. He girdled the tree enough to kill it and getting me some firewood!
Since then the bear population has exploded to the point where they are more of a hassle with garbage cans, breaking into homes even. They are so bad the Fish and Game won't even take complaints anymore. 2 counties north and they are shot with 22s in hopes they go die an agonizing death. I don't agree with that.
Yes we have a bear season- first week of December! How dumb is that? We can't bait them, no dogs , archery or muzzle loader in the new October season or muzzle loader or shotgun in December- NO buckshot. Oh and no bear hunting on state / public land.
BROWN LABS MATTER !!
