You just can't fix stupid...

Post by AJMD429 »

.
OK, so there's this huge body of water, several thousand miles across, that gets blown about by wind, affected by the moon, and tossed about by storms, so even during a normal month, the level fluctuates a foot or so every few seconds, a yard or so every six hours, and dozens or more feet during storms.

I live near a small river, and it fluctuates a few inches every few days, and a couple times a year rises 9 to 15 feet.
I wouldn't put my home at the 14 foot mark, and complain that every few years it got flooded.
I wouldn't put my house at the 16 foot mark, and assume that just because in my lifetime 15 ft was max, that it would never go higher.

But the wealthy elite who want to run everyone else's life will built their houses near the OCEAN, then be 'surprised' when the sea level rises FIVE INCHES and that is enough to wreck their homes.

I'm sorry, but if you find the luxury of living next to the beautiful ocean, that's fine, but you just have to DEAL WITH the REALITY that the ocean is BIG, and cannot be controlled, no matter how many laws we pass.

The people who bitch the loudest about zoning are usually the ones who build/live in the stupidous places, such as unstable shoreline, etc.
Then when the inevitable occurs, they whine, "I've got a problem, what are you going to do about it"?
Yep, they live among us....

In the old days people took their cues from animals, you wouldn't build your house in a flood plane because you didn't see groundhogs holes in the flood plane.
It's called common sense.

Now on the other hand a friend buys a house that was built in the 1700s. 2 miles from the Delaware River. Modern flood maps say it's in the 200 year flood plane. Yup you guessed it, first year he was flooded twice! Full basement and water half way up the first floor! On his property the groundhogs are 200 yards UP HILL!

The problem with Common Sense is that it's not so common anymore!

Actually.......this has changed a lot for many, depending on staes and/or region.
IF they reside in a flood plain (nowadays), flood insurance likely is unavailable.

All these recent earthquakes here in the NE there has been some damage to homes, including wells going dry.
Because earthquakes are extremely rare here no one has an earthquake rider for homeowners insurance so everyone who has had damage is on the hook for repairs. I'm guessing that now an EQ rider will become at least optional if not mandatory.
But this activity is giving USGS the ability to map the fault in detail.
Fact is ya can't do anything to prevent it but. However you can opt to live above flood stage on high ground.

Mandatory insurance is a quirky thing. For instance, here if you have a mortgage you're required to have fire and if in a "flood area" flood insurance. And why not, generally speaking these are money makers for insurance companies (no collusion) between mortgage companies and insurance companies here. Yet even though the entire state California is an earthquake zone, with tens of thousands of documented earthquakes, earthquake insurance isn't required.

Why, because if it were required insurance companies would be forced to offer it. They're smart enough to know they'd go broke in a major quake. And mortgage companies don't care if your home is damaged/destroyed by a quake because you will still be on the hook for the loan.

I do have fire insurance. I do live in a "flood area" as determined by some dishonest fool. I've mentioned before I'm 147' above sea level, on top of a hill. There has never in all of recorded history, or geological for that matter been a flood here. So no flood insurance. As to earthquake, I'd look at it if it weren't offered at extortion rates (heck higher that mafia protection rates). But since I don't I have a backup plan.

That plan is simple. Bull doze the pile onto the rear of my lot. Pour a new slab on the front with full utility hookups. Then park my Airstream on the pad. Oh, and apply for a major reduction in my already pretty low property tax.

Oh, I forgot to mention tsunami insurance. Well yes the top of my hill, again never been hit by a tsunami in any sort of history, is in a tsunami zone. If we get a tsunami large enough to hit the vertical cliff face on the coast and then get up to my house, the rest of the metropolitan Los Angeles are is going to be erased. So my tsunami back up plan is to take my Airstream to Reno and visit the kids.

if an earthquake is that big, will there still be a road to Reno? the official Cascadia Event cult in the PNW has slowly learned what's coming and then slowly revealed their plan to assist victims. They've evaluated the likely road situation and now admit that there won't be a lot of "rescue" of local survivors and stress the need to have enough food and water to last two weeks. highly optimistic IMO. I have beans and rice that will last a long time. Fresh water will be higher valued than premium ethanol when the "ten minute shake" comes to pass.

the second iffy thing here is Mount Rainer, less than 25 air miles from us. If that goes off as a salute to The Fault then all bets are off. When he pops his top we will be be under a hard rain of fire rocks returning from the stratosphere, and everything will burn.

Naturally, the worshiped "nature" will have the last say for a lot of pilgrims. Our Hope is our long term assurance policy.

Grizz, Reno is post tsunami. I have a route that should be high enough. Earthquake I stay put. The only scarce commodity will be potable water.

Oh, did I mention my entire working career involved water. The last 20 of it as a water quality consultant. I can darn near smack a stone and get water. Fortunately that’s not necessary unless the Pacific Ocean dries up.
