1893 Marlin 32-40 extraction problem

Post by jorgy »

I was at the range shooting a 32/40. The upper 1/3 of one of the
shells detached from the rest of the shell & became lodged in the
chamber towards the throat. This has happened before & when it
does I take a stiff shotgun bore bush(12 ga) & insert from the receiver & pull it back. This will usually extract the shell. It did not
work today. Any suggestions for removing outside of taking to a
gunsmith? the nearest one for me is 40 miles one way.

2 ways I have seen this done.

1. Take a stiff piece of wire, paper clip, or coat hanger and bend a tiny hook, on the end. Fish it in from the breech and grab the edge of the case.

2. Use a large rat tail file, make contact, twist and pull. You have to make sure you only contact the case.

Good luck and let us know what happens.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

This is not too uncomon. I have removed the same from my .32-40 by running a rod in from the muzzle with a tight fitting patch and stoping 1/2" or so short of the case mouth. Then melt and pour a chamber cast of Brownells Cerrosafe. after a few seconds, just push it out the breech with the rod. Slick,Works every time. :D
A slip up with that rat tail file could cost you a barrel. :x

Take a tap that wil just thread into the case and turn it in to the brass. Tap out with a rod. Done.
