One of the first things I did when I moved south and near to Portsmouth was to visit HMS Victory, some of the cannons had flintlock ignition which surprised me.

Re: HMS Victory tour
I've read that the use of flintlocks for ignition greatly increased the ability for seasoned gun crews to aim at -- and hit -- the masts of opponents, a very small target indeed, unless chain- or ball-and-chain shot was loaded.gamekeeper wrote: ↑Wed Nov 08, 2023 5:02 pm One of the first things I did when I moved south and near to Portsmouth was to visit HMS Victory, some of the cannons had flintlock ignition which surprised me.
John:
Visiting the Victory and tipping a pint (or more!) with YOU is still on my bucket list.

Darryl it would be a pleasure to knock back a couple of pints with you....
Funny thing about the flintlocks is they had no flints I did inform the tour guide where they could get some

Darryl, I'm still laffin' ...

Re: HMS Victory tour
Use of fuse to ignite a cannon powder charge resulted in far too much variability. Particularly on a ship, with both the ship itself and the target responding to wave action. As technology advanced, the use of what is called a cannon lock allowed the use of percussion caps. And later, the use of friction primers, which allowed for even better timing and accuracy.
I own several cannons, with bores from .45 caliber to 1 7/8" (think golf ball). And, I have two mortars, one sized for a soda can sized projectile and the other for a billiard ball sized projectile. While I often use fuse, I prefer the use of a cannon lock that employs a 209 primer. Things can change down range while a fuse burns. I consider the use of a cannon lock a safety enhancement.
Here are two of my cannons. One has a bronze barrel mounted on a field carriage. The other is cast iron with a 4140 ordinance steel liner and is mounted on a solid oak naval style carriage that I made after studying plans for the carriages on the USS Constitution. Both guns have the golf ball bore. And both are basically half scale versions of a six pounder Napoleon.

Love your ordinance, Ithardman. I bought a nice pop-can mortar from Dom Carpenter when he was still in business, but never made the effort to haul it out into the desert and shoot it. Wish I had. I always thought the Mountain Howitzer was a handsome article.
Re: HMS Victory tour
Thanks. I have a Confederate Coehorn Mortar (pop/soda/beer can bore) made by Dom Carpenter. As far as I know, he is still in the black powder cannon and ordnance business.

+1 to that! Those look like a lot of fun and history! "Historical fun" I'd call it!
