A few moments in deerstand remembering a friend who passed..

Post by AJMD429 »

Got a call yesterday from a guy who used to come hunt on my brother's bottom land field across the road from us. His hunting buddy who came with him was the one who showed me how to skin and butcher a deer, and when we had a goat needing butchered he would do it (they are livestock but we get to know them by name and personality so we never could butcher them).

They didn't come out last year but had other places they would hunt so I didn't think much of it. Turns out the guy has been fighting melanoma, and has mets everywhere now. He's not expected to live past the weekend. His buddy just wanted to ask if it was OK to bring him out for one last 'hunt' if he has the strength to get in a vehicle.

Prayers up that he can make it.

edit - he did not make it out to hunt. :(

Done. I hope he gets his last hunt. One of my friends put off taking cancer trearment so that he could at least make one more hunt. He didn't make another season. A question of priorities.

Due to the office move, and other such mini-crises, I never made it out to deer-hunt this year. I'm not that into 'deer hunting', but when in my 40's, since I like firearms, I figured I should do the right thing, and show my son (44MagHunter) how to hunt, since I'd shown all my kids how to shoot as first-graders. Mission accomplished, and 44MagHunter is now a far better deer hunter than I ever was, and has used about any weapon other than an atlatl. So I don't really have to hunt much, though I must admit when I can actually get the time, I do like it, and there is of course no more honorable way to earn one's meat ration.

Anyway, today was the last day of 'gun season' for deer in Indiana, and sunset was at 5:21 pm; we are allowed to hunt until 30 minutes after sunset. I made it to my deer stand about 5:05, but ordinarily I never hunt on Sunday evenings, or any other evening when I work the next day, because I don't want to be up late processing the deer, or worse yet, have to deal with a wounded deer to find in the gathering dusk.

However, this year, I just had to go out there, and spend some time remembering Bob, who patiently showed me how to butcher my first deer. I sat in the stand and watched it get dark, and listened to the birds and animals scuttling into places of shelter for the night; even heard a couple deer heading to the nearby thicket, but I wasn't there to hunt this evening. Bob, you will live on forever, in all whose lives you affected so positively, including mine and my son's.

P.S. guys and gals - EVERY four weeks you should be doing a self skin exam, checking for any new or darker spot on your skin (anywhere - melanoma is not just where sun hits you). Women should just do it when they do their self-breast-exams, and since it is hard to examine one's own back, just take that time to check each other's backs. That is what killed my friend Bob. This if from the textbook, Clinical Dermatology by Thomas P. Habif, and shows how obviously the sites of melanomas in this series of patients corresponds to something other than "sun exposure" (mid-back vs. upper-back, male/bald scalp vs. female scalp, female breast vs. necklace area, vulva vs. thigh/abdomen):

AJ, sorry for your but you do have a lot of good memories to hunt with. Sitting in the woods with a good rifle, you can get some good thinking done.

Your trip to the deer-stand in memory of your friend is great. You will remember that trip and your friend forever more. Many of my friends are quite a bit older than I, so mortality is slowly picking at them. I've made a number of trips afield, whether to hunt or just shoot an old gun, to help me grieve and to solidify a memory. May your friend rest in peace and may you heal well and find comfort in his memory.

Since this post years ago I realized I've lost three or four close buddies, most of whom were outdoors types.

Always keep the young'uns in mind, and pass the love of the outdoors along...

Amen.
I have a bear rug that was shot in Alaska by dear ol uncle Jack. His daughter gave it to me after his passing. The last season he hunted he was 94!

Gone to the happy hunting grounds are so many good folks young and old. Remember the good times with them always!
