"Oh Say Can You See..." (Prayers Requested) < 5/14 update >

"Oh Say Can You See..." I sure hope so!

<< 5/14 update added below >>

Prayers requested for my eyes please. A couple of weeks ago, I'd posted how it was a joy to shoot iron-sighted rifles again, after a multi-year hiatus, following successful cataract surgery that got me to 20/15 vision in the right (aiming) eye following surgery. Fast forward 2 weeks, and just a couple of days after meeting up with the Ysabel Kid for dinner in SC, I'd been noticing a "ghostly blob" in my vision of that eye. The Doc says flying didn't cause it, but I have to wonder, as now I'm banned from flying for 5 weeks or so. I called the Eye Doc on Thursday before Noon, and by 2PM that day they were prepping me for emergency eye surgery to repair a detached retina and save my vision. Yikes!

So here we are 3 days later, and I can still only see colors and shapes with the eye -- and it looks like h*ll too! It is still heavily dilated 3 days later, and it could be another 5 to 7 days before I know what vision I'll have left... The new lens should still be 20/15, but it's an open question of what the retina will deliver. There's an overall 95% success rate of "saving some functional vision", but that still means a 1 in 20 chance of having more issues -- but for sure, it would have been a 100% chance of losing that eye if I had not called them that day -- as I'd been planning to shoot 3 rounds of Trap that evening. The shooting (right handed shooter) probably would have made the right eye's retina situation that much worse...........

And dang, they've now postponed fixing the cataract in the other eye for 6 to 8 weeks or longer...

I can't recall asking for good thoughts or prayers from this forum except for when my Dad or Mom passed -- but I sure could use some now.

Hope to SEE  you guys here better in the coming weeks. Thank you, and God Bless All.

7, my old shooting coach had gone through this same thing years ago. Cataract surgery, detached retina and emergency repair surgery plus the doc put a bubble of nitrogen in his eye to prevent the collapse of the eye. He is still shooting!
Another friend was salmon fishing and as he was landing a fish the hook pulled and his split shot came back and lodged in his right eye. Instinct made him yank it out! That caused more damage. He now has cadaver iris and still has a blind spot and had to learn to shoot lefty. If he hadn't forgotten his glasses that day...
I hope that you heal and that your other eye is a quick & easy fix!

Prayers sent for a better outcome. My wife had a botched knee surgery, then had 2 more to fix it which were both unsuccessful. Would hate to have something like that happen with eyes. Prayers sent.

You've got mine, No. 7.
One of my cataract surgeries did not quite go as planned, although it finally resolved itself. It was disquieting to put it very mildly, but nothing as serious as your condition.

Prayers up.! We were out of town last week , eight years ago I had cataract surgery on both eyes. I was thrilled as I could see like an Eagle. around six weeks after surgery I had a torn retina in My left eye. the Doctors tried to weld it using a laser in the office. it tore again and had to have a viterectomy . they put the bubble of gas in it and it was five weeks off of work . A year later same thing in My right eye. this time it tore in the back of the eye and I had to rent a chair that You put your face in and stay that way all day for a week. it has a mirror you can watch TV with. couldn't lift more than ten lbs. or put my head below My heart. I watched the whole series of Longmire.
The Doctors had no answers on the cause of this. Shooting? ,concussions? lifting? all I got was a look like this. . when I was released to go back to work they said Your fine . I said so now I can suddenly unload trucks with 100 lb. boxes ? Yep Your fine...... I wish You the Best as this is a pretty traumatic thing to go thru.

Thanks for asking -- will do!

And thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers -- I DO believe it has helped.

After being legally blind for ~2 weeks, my vision has started to improve as the large gas bubble dissipates and gets smaller -- I will probably need another 1.5 weeks for it to be totally gone. I'm still wearing a patch over my right eye (over my glasses, with the right lens removed) and using only the left eye with its corrective lens to get around. My right eye is STILL dilated -- almost 5 weeks now (due to the daily drops). I can drive with the right eye patched using my good left eye, but as the cataract lens and glasses are different measurements from the retina, it gets squirrely when I move my head. But that works OK for watching TV, using the glasses for left eye and the cataract-replacement lens in the right (no lens in the glasses). I did jerk my head quickly over the weekend and saw a couple of new floaters and a tinge of fresh red blood around the gas bubble; the Eye Doc said it's not typical, but does happen, and it should clear up along with the bubble.

The big question is how long I'll have to wait for the right eye to fully heal before they'll proceed with fixing the cataract in the left eye. I was hoping to get both eyes done in 6 weeks time, but now it could stretch out to a 3 months or so... But -- at least there's signs that I am getting my vision back!!!

Cheers to all!
