Reloading Tips Browning 95 in 30'06

Post by big bear »

I have read in several places that one should avoid "modern high pressure loads" in original Winchester 95 rifles to avoid enlarging headspace. I have a Browning replica 95 in 30'06. Do any of you folk reload for this rifle. I have added a replica climbing Lyman sight and rifle was quite accurate with some Winchester 150gr factory ammo when I tried a few rounds.I'd love to hear from anyone who has reloaded for and shot their Browning 95.

Thanks!

Interesting topic. I have to think the modern Japanese steel in the Brownings is top notch stuff. I'm interested to hear what people think on this one.

For sure the steel is better. I always assumed it might be the design. I have done some looking and so far I can't find anyone who actually would know saying anything about it.I am retired and as my range s being remodelled I have lots of time to reload so I wanted to get my 95 ready to go.

See if this helps:
“ Winchester did proof tests on the .30-40 Model 1895 at 60,000 psi, but that was, of course, not a service load. The modern Miroku-made 1895's, both Brownings & Winchesters, do fine with current .30-06 & .270 factory loads, many of which probably well exceed 47,000 psi.”

Tycer thanks a million!! Don't know why I didn't find that article.Answers my question nicely. I'll load "midling_ loads and be good to go.If I come up with something good I'll be sure to post it.I might even try some cast bullet loads.

Cheers!

I have fed my Browning 1895 standard pressure loads for 20 years with zero issues. They would of not sold it if it couldn't handle off the shelf ammo. It likes 180 grains the best but I picked up a bunch of Hornady's 165 grainers to play with this summer. It is one of my most accurate lever guns. I use a Williams FP sight with a brass bead front sight.

Upgraded the sights on my 30-06 Browning 95 with an XS white stripe front blade and a Marbles tang rear.
Mine hated every type of 150gr. Friend brought back several hundred Hornady 168gr AMax blems from a Kansas trip. Loaded to 2640fps with 4064, was able to get 1.25" 100yd 5 shot group, then 2.25" 200yd 5 shot group. Used it as my main game gun for several years and dropped everything DRT out to 235 yds.

I have 3, all Winchesters made in Japan, a 30-06 carbine, a 30-06 takedown rifle and a 30-40 carbine. I shoot full power 30-06 loads that I also use in my bolt action rifles with no ill effects. I shoot standard book loads in the 30-40, again with no problem.
