1873 project

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

My .44 Special 1873 won’t feed Keith loads and I think it’s because the elevator is opened up to accommodate.45 Colt cartridges. Too much slop lets the .44 Special hang up on the left side of the chamber.

So I am working on a.32-20/.357 elevator to open it up but leave enough metal to guide the .44 cartridge into the chamber.

As I understand, all three large case carriers are the same.
Scott, even my 45 Colt rifles (1873s & 1860) won't smoothly feed a SWC style bullet. And the 45 Colt has such a small rim in relation to the case body, you wouldn't think that much of an angle would matter. But, it does. The only sure fire way I know to feed SWCs is to "ramp" or put a radius in the mouth of the chamber. And that must be done very carefully, as you don't want to leave the rear of the cartridge unsupported once chambered. Not that I've done it or actually seen it done. Everyone I know has simply stuck with RFN bullets. But, I've heard of it being done.

That’s right. All of the larger carriers are the same.

I don’t know if this will work but it is an interesting experiment.

The hole in the elevator doesn’t have to be completely concentric so I think I can pull this off.
