Hornady 45gr Bee bullet in .223?

Post by 1894cfan »

Just ordered up a couple boxes of Hornady's .224 45gr Bee hollow point bullet and need a load for .223. Trail Boss maybe? Fast powder light load? Anyone have any suggestions? :)

You know the load.....powder developed for the .22 hornet in 1930 and available to handloaders since '32. One cubic centimeter volume or thereabouts. I use it with the speer 46 gr. flat. You know the load.....

Let me guess, 8gr 2400? Already use 10gr 2400 with RCBS 58gr cast bullets in .223 that's some 2k fps. Ya came through again, Ray. :D 8) BTW, also have some SR4759 if you have any suggestions on that powder.

Er, right powder but I was thinking quite a bit more. 2400 is not as egregiously as position sensitive as other powders but that weight you mention is way too low for that burn rate. We are talking .223 and not bee or hornet, right ? 8 gr. 2400 is not even max. in those tiny cartridges .When I get a chance I'll post foto of load (.223) from book for 55 gr. jacketed.

When I mentioned that "you know the load" I think I had you confused with another member and a recent discussion where that member's tried and true .357 load matched an experimental .300 whisper load.

1992 Hercules manual lists 14.9gr 2400 with Speer 45gr Spitzer at 3,030fps. I don't want to go anywhere near that with the 45gr XTP type hollow point. Maybe 1500 to 2000 fps. It also lists 14gr 2400 with the 55gr FMJ at 2,685fps.
Might try 12gr 2400 with the 45 grainer though. What's your thought on that?

Actually that was me. I had posted about the Hornady .308" 86gr RN 30 Mauser bullet in 300BLK. You gave me the 13.5gr 2400 load for that bullet. :D

Not sure if you'll use it, but that same manual lists 25gr 2400 with the Sierra 150gr spitzer in .308W at 2,215. Might go good with 30/30 bullets instead of the spitzer. Might just try that load myself. Some 30 years ago I worked up a load of 26gr of SR 4759 with 30/30 150gr bullets that was pretty accurate in my M77RSI in 308.

I've got some 45gr Speers that I've been intending to load in the .223 at Hornet speed myself. Was thinking 2400 but then I started reading up on reduced loads with Blue Dot. Still have some of that around since I quit using it for 357, just need to get on it.

No worries, samsi, but the Speer JFN is actually 46gr. What I did with the boxes of that stuff that I picked is 25gr of H335 in .223 cases that cycles my ARs pretty good, and stuffing in Win 22 mag dyna points that I pulled the bullets on and replaced with the 46gr JFNs since the original bullets were 45gr plated lead bullets that leaded up my barrels pretty good.
At least one box of the two that I ordered of the Hornady 45gr JHPs will go into the 22 mag rounds that I loaded with cast 55gr bullets with the original powder load.

Thanks guys, looks like I'm gonna use all 200 bullets stuffed in 22 mag cases instead of the .223!
