"The Battle for Narvik" -- WWII, Norway

Post by Old No7 »

You don't see too many WWII movies about Norway, or at least I haven't seen too many, but this one is really very good. My twin brother told me about it and it turns out we'd both watched it (Netflix) on the same night.

From the listing on Rotten Tomatoes (but there's no scores yet -- it's too new):
"In April, 1940, the eyes of the world are on Narvik, a small town in northern Norway, a source of the iron ore needed for Hitler's war machine. Through two months of fierce winter warfare, the German leader is dealt with his first defeat."

Enjoy!

That one is on my list. Haven't watched it yet, I want to be able to see it without any distractions. Hard to do around here lately. :D

Jason, I think you are being distracted by too many new firearms. You need to send a few of them my way.

Just trying to help! :D

I hadn't heard of this but will look for it. I spent some time touring Norway and some WW2 sites including the Sub pens in Trondheim. One of the best WW2 museums I've ever been in was close by as well. How the Norgies used fishing boats as sub tenders in and around the fjords was fascinating and a testiment to wartime determination.

Thanks for the tip.

I have not seen it yet but I have a friend who was born in Narvik in 1938. He told me about the movie and then showed me pictures his dad took after the battle. He even had pictures of his house burning to the ground. I can't imagine living through that.

Interesting part of WW II that isn't generally known outside of Norway. Even less known but strategically vastly more important was the sinking of the SF Hydro. Carried out knowing full well Norwegian civilians would likely be killed.
