Cataract surgery

Post by J Miller »

Towards August of last year I realized my eyes were not good any more. My wife actually commented that my right eye looked filmy. We got me an appointment at an eye clinic and they confirmed ... cataracts. So we tried to get the ins to go foe lazer surgery, but no go. Then we got sick from something. Then covid, then my wife had the stroke.
Somewhere in there I called the Eye clinic and set an appointment for a recheck. Yep, they're still bad.
So I go in for surgery on the worst eye on the 25th of this month, then a couple weeks later on the other eye.
At that point, I should be able to drive. Right now I'm depending on a family friend for transportation.

So, when my wife had her eye surgery some years back she went from legally blind to 20-25. I'm hoping and praying for the same results.

Then on the 28th I finally get a visit to the vein specialist for the leg problems. My ins is gonna hate me.

Sure hope it all goes smoothly Joe, I have cataracts too but apparently according to doc not bad enough yet for surgery.
I will continue praying for you both.

I've had cataracts removed from both eyes, the first at 54. To be honest I was pretty apprehensive at first. I mean heck, they're cutting on my eye. While I thought my vision wasn't that bad before I saw a marked improvement afterwards. Vision is now 20/20, with one eye slightly better.
I'd say don't stress about it, the whole procedure is quick. painless and the results are worth it.

No cataract formation for me yet, but as someone with blue eyes and German/Irish heritage, they are bound to happen. Joe, prayers up. The advances in cataract surgery in the last ten or so years are amazing. 20/20 vision cannot happen for me.

.
Many of my patients have had cataract surgery, and every one of them is pretty much said the same thing. They say that they didn't realize how bad the vision was until after the surgery, at which point they can see much better.

Unfortunately there are some things it doesn't help, like floaters and stuff like that.

It's been a couple of years since my last exam. That's dumb considering my age and diabetes. But, things are dimming and have a yellowish tinge to them. It's getting rough at night. I'd best make an appointment.

I had both of mine done about 5 years ago, dominant eye didn't change focus anymore and driving at night was rough. A guy at work who was only a year older than me had it done, so I waited a year and let him be the wind test dummy. Mine came out at 20/25 but still have issues with astigmatism so going to beak down and go for glasses this year, mainly because I'm not shooting iron sights as well as I could be.

And yes, one of the most startling things afterwards is how bright everything is.

Another success story here. Last year my left eye changed so fast my year old new glasses weren’t working for it. Dr said yeah it’s the cataract in that eye. Finally had the surgery last August and now it’s 20/20; best ever in my whole life. They say I no longer need glasses to drive. The surgery itself was fine, the nurse gave me an IV margarita & I didn’t feel a thing. No hangover either.

Used prescription drops before and after, didn’t drive for a short bit. Best Dr visit ever.

Prayers up Joe. I got through my first 50 or so years with 20/20 vision. My vision started to degrade rapidly and I figured it was just my time since both of my parents and all my siblings had worn glasses or contacts most of their lives. Went from regular glasses to bifocals in the space of 6 months and my eyesight continued to degrade. Went back in and they discovered aggressive cataracts. Had the surgery you are talking about. I went with multifocal lenses given my age. The surgery worked well, but I ended up being one of the about 2% that still needed some help (cheaters). Only problem is that it just kills your night vision (with multifocal lenses). But honestly, the surgery is no big deal. You will do great!

Blaine, I became a Type One diabetic in late 1999. It's a helluva disease. Are you fairly satisfied with your management of your blood sugar?

where are you'all going for your surgery? there are chain store places like mcdonalds of the eyeballs. there are competing ads extolling new improved processes. Any recommendations? I'd like to have best possible eyesight for the sailboat journey of explorations . . .

The only problems I have are me  But, for the most part my A1C stays between 6 - 7. VA sends insulin for a very reasonable co-pay and the other supplies are free.
I'm anxious for warmer weather so I can get in my usual 5-10 mile bicycle rides.

Good for you! Your A1C is excellent. Mine hangs around in that area too. About five or six years ago I gave up, realizing my aging PCP didn't care about the latest in diabetic care so I found a physicion's assistant endocrinologist who is excellent. She put me on a continuous glucose monitoring device that sends my blood sugar readings to my cell phone. The device shows trends in my blood sugar, both upward and downward and has audible alarms at both ends of the range. It has enormously improved my A1C results.
