Hunting photos and activities.

Post by Nath »

I needed meat last weekend so hunted pheasant.
January birds are a lot more clued up now and they take a bit of out smarting.
Gun of choice this occasion was my .45 smooth rifle. Loaded with 50gn of fine granulated powder and 3/4oz of #7 shot seperated with four os cards.

Not wanting to leave the levergun out of the frame I went predator hunting yesterday but found non but just going dark a buck rabbit stepped out at about 60yds. Using my bino's to find which way he was facing I endeavoured to take aim in the failing light. I sent the 150 spire point of unknown make with 8.5gns of Herco and got him through the ribs and front leg. Not bad for an old half blind fellow!

Hope you like the little story.

Nath, always nice to see you and Jess in the field. It is slightly jarring to see you with pheasants in the woods; here it is more a cattails and cornfields kind of thing, although we used to kick a few out of the brushy creekbeds where the quail loved to hide.

She is starting to show her age some. Gets burnt out sooner.
She got a mite recently. A mange. Got some spray and shampoo for it. Think we are on top of it now.
She got in a scrap with a fox a few week's ago and got bitten a little. It shocked her and she sulked for a couple of days

Yep...we get them all the time......every night several come up and eat what we don't eat. My SIL who lives 2 doors down, maybe 300 yards away asked my wife the other night, "what are you feeding those foxes, we thought one of the steers broke out of the butcher house.----they actually are very friendly...if we open the door they run out in the yard, maybe 50 yards and come back to feed more......your name comes up regularly here...always tell my wife, "where's Nath when you need him?" I can't shoot them anymore....they are like pets....couple of times I stung them with shot loads out of 32-20 but they come right back.....it's entertainment......we realize it's not a smart thing to do...(feed them) but some rules are made to be broken.----006

Yea Nath....I told Gamekeeper I'd set em up for awhile and the same goes for you......we have loads of foxes around here since the game commission stopped the bounty on them.......you would have a field day, literally.....I'll shoot the mangy ones but it's been awhile since we've seen a bad one.....

Foxes are nasty critters though.......the realization of that comes when they pee on the cat food so other animals won't eat it and many times leave a dump on the front steps or sidewalk......one time the weather was about 10 degrees and a Fox dropped a load and it was steaming....I told mom, "look! Obama is here smoking a cigarette" :D
