357 would be my choice as well. Doesn't hurt the wallet or shoulder as much as 44 magnum but not much in NA that it is not suitable defense against.

My son sez a .357 carbine. Only because he won a championship with his... And only won because he missed faster than I did! My answer is a short Rifle in 45 Colt... Because 4s are bigger than 3s!

I've had an older, Interarms import for a long time. Bought it unused in the box at a show for all of $280! It fed .357s just fine, but if you weren't careful and levered a .38 Spl. too quickly it would flip the unfired cartridge right out of the receiver. Sent it to NKJ and made it into a super reliable and fun carbine. It's a really good shooter, but no match for my Marlin CST. Although the last one of those I saw on GB sold for over $2500!
I had a Large loop, pre safety .44 Magnum that I should have kept but again, it took a back seat to my Marlin 94P.

So basically, you need all of them. :D

I've never owned a Rossi but if I could find one lighter that my .357 Henry or shorter and handier than my Marlin CB in .45 Colt I would buy them.

I have a .257, 24" barrel, I have used it forPistol Caliber Lever Action silhouette for years, has never stuttered. Tuned up the trigger and smoothed out the action soon after I got it. 8 grains of Lil Gun, 125 grain Berry's Plated Bullets, very little if any recoil, like shooting a .22, knocks 'em down vigorously. :D

.
Over the years because I have bought for myself plus my kids, I have had Rossi rifles in several configurations pass through my hands:

357 Mag -
16" with Marbles Bullseye sights
20" with Williams FP Firesights
24" octagonal with Taurus Tang & Lyman Globe front sights.

44 Mag -
16" with Marbles Bullseye sights
20" with tube-loading and Williams FP regular sights
24" octagonal with Taurus Tang & Lyman Globe front sights.

45 Colt
16" with Marbles Bullseye sights
16" with Burris Fastfire-2, Lasermax pistol laser, and rail-light
20" with Williams FP Firesights
24" octagonal with Taurus Tang & Lyman Globe front sights and brass frame and FANCY burled wood.

454 Casull - both with tube-loading -
16" with Marbles Bullseye sights
20" with Williams FP Firesights

I really think it's fun to shoot the 24 inch octagonals just from a nostalgia standpoint, but from a practical standpoint the two I would pick would be the 16 inch versions of the 357 Magnum and the 454 Casull.

The accuracy doesn't seem to increase for me with the longer barrels and I really like the light handy 16 inch versions.

Nothing is lighter than the 357, which feels like a 22 long rifle and doesn't kick much more than that, especially with 38 Special loads, which are plenty for most practical purposes when fired from a 16-inch carbine.

On the other hand when you grab the 454 Casull, you don't have to worry about if your load is too hot. I mostly shoot 'Ruger level' 45 Colt loads out of it but try to use the longer brass to avoid chamber crud.

I know the Rossi's are not considered high quality and I get that, but I bought them when I didn't have much money to spend, and with a little bit of polishing they have all been quite reliable and fun guns to use that I don't worry about dropping or scratching.

I only have one Rossi and I have it because it was cheap. It’s a previously owned 24 inch barrel stainless rifle in 45 Colt. The action is really smooth and I suspect it was worked on. It looks amazing and is slick. A bit long and heavy for my lever gun tastes though.

If I had no short cartridge lever actions and I was picking from the catalog. I would probably get a 20 inch short rifle (not SRC) in 44 magnum. Case hardened action with blued barrel. Pretty, balanced, traditional and versatile for plinking, CAS, defense or hunting.

Having the long stainless 45 and my 1894 Marlin in 44, my pick for a hypothetical new one would be a 16 inch SRC in 357. I might go for stainless as it would likely be in the trunk of my car most times. I’m not really picky on finishes or cartridges though.

I'd pick a 20 inch stainless in 480Ruger. I have other firearms that cover the lesser calibers. The 480 is one of the most enjoyable cartridges I've ever shot, and I've shot many many. The 480 has a pleasant recoil, throws a heavy lead and the sound is not ear piercing, rather it's more like a low pitched vroooom. Capable of dropping the smallest and largest critters and light weight to carry, short enough to handle in any situation. It's like my dream rifle.

For me I have the Rossi 16" Big Loop short rifle in .357 really like it. But for caliber wise I will take the 44 Mag which I have in the exact same rifle but Winchester.

Had my Rossi for almost 30 years. Pre-safety 20" Carbine 44-40. Action job immediately after purchase, have not had one issue in all that time. Main CAS shooter for 20 years till I got a 73. Refinished the wood early on, had an almost black finish from the factory, cut off the carbine stock added a 2" pad and cover, Marbles full buckhorn rear sight. Perfect.

Veeman, that is a nice rig. I ordered a Rossi in .44-40 decades ago when they were still handled by Interarms. When it came in at the gun shop I chanced to look down the bore and discovered it was unrifled! Interarms immediately took it back and shipped another one. Ever since then I have always looked down the bore of any rifle or handgun I purchase to make sure it had lands and grooves.

Well, it's not a Rossi but I just recently picked up a very near new modern Winchester 1892 Short Rifle in 45 Colt. It's my first '92 and just as ol John Moses intended, is perfectly matched with pistol cartridges. I really really like it in every way. I also have a tang safety Win 94 Trapper in 45 Colt and have enjoyed that thoroughly.

So that said and to the question of which Rossi to pick were I to decide to hunt one down..... Probably a 16" Trapper, blued, and in 45 Colt. I just love the wide range of power level you can load the 45 Colt for when used in these 1892s, with the added benefit of not having to concern ones self with crud buildup in the chamber firing shorter companion cartridges. Ruger level 45 Colts send some horsepower downrange from even a 16" Trapper. And a Trapper to me is an absolute pleasure to trek around the woods with. So light, handy, and well capable 100yds and in.

I believe the Rossi quality has come up quite a bit over the past few years. For the price point, (around $700) these are pretty good.

Picked this one up the other day to add to our test battery. (We sell more Rossi Rails than any other rail we make)

My brother has a somewhat older Rossi "Puma" 92, stainless, 44mag, 16" barrel. The darn thing is functional and accurate despite it's safety on the bolt. But then again, new Winchester have the tang safety and some of us have learned to at least tolerate it.

But anyway, he is very pleased with his save one complaint. Rough edges, particularly the loading gate cutout. It's actually sharp enough to cut skin if you aren't careful loading it. Other than that it seems to be a good little rifle and shoots darn respectable groups.

I too have heard that Rossi's build quality has been improving.

Just watched your video. Yours is exactly like my brother's. How are the edges on your newer model? In particular the loading gate cutout. 👍🏻

In these days of a descent lever rifle from the "big" names running closer to $1000 to start and going up from there, the Rossi might be catching it's stride and carving out a nice market share for itself selling for what a new Henry centerfire sold for 5-7 years ago.

I only own 2 centrefires these days Bill, a 223 bolt action and a 92 rossi in 44mag, 20" stainless and it does most of the work.I used to run a couple of 357 rossis previously but wanted more thump with subsonics in particular so the 357's got traded. Big fan of the 44 now. I talk to some african hunters and aussie cullers online and it would probably turn the hairs of folks but they will at times shoot real big game with the calibre, cattle species etc if they dont have anything else to hand. While its no 375HH with the right setup and bullet everyone goes home safe. I dont intend to shoot such game but its good to know what a well placed hardcast can do. Only change worth making in my opinion is a better twist for heavyweight subsonics so I might get a second 44 and rebarrel it to that end. As some above have said the latest CBC stamped rossis seem to be nicer out of the box. Mine was smoother, wood nicer and no sharp load gate this time.

I'd have to say "44 magnum" just because I'm a big fan of the cartridge, but I have to admit the 357 magnum would be a bit more flexible provided it would feed 38 specials reliably.

If only one, I would prefer the .44 Mag. Absolutely nothing at all the .44 Mag won't do. I have this Rossi in .357 Mag and the exact same style in a Winchester .44 Mag. Prefer the .44

I was told, Rossi makes and sell more 357's than all the other calibers combined.

BUT, I've had a hankering to build another 41mag. I recently built this one for a customer. I think this might be the all-around cartridge for the 92. Sort of fills the gap like the 38-40.

The only Rossi I would want is one that has all of the Rossi removed!! There is a Winchester hiding behind the surface of every Rossi ,just have to bring it out.

Nothing on this one left as it was, All sights replaced, action job, stocks replaced with black walnut, Proper short 8 3/8" forend for trapper.
All receiver contours reshaped to match Winchester 92 design. All metal rust blued ,saddle ring installed.

Unless Rossi started making them that way I' ll pass.
Especially at today's price. I had a hard time paying $250 for mine back in early 90's.
