And yes I had a real rifle along as well in case it was a longer shot , as I don’t have aspirations of trying to kill one past fifty yards wIth it . Fifty cal roundball should make a nice enough hole .

That's great !

I've watched keith warren and daughter on both the telly and fone/tablets/laptops use similar contraptions with both bullets and broad headed bolts to slay beasts great and small. Good hunting !

A friend of mine has been looking into these more powerful air rifles. Went to his house for a little Christmas get together for our families last Saturday and later in the evening he was showing me some videos on YouTube of people using them to hunt with. Pretty impressive but still light years behind firearms. However, one video we watched showed an older fellow taking some hogs with a larger bore air rifle. I think he was using a 45cal. The bullets are lighter and most of the bigger Bores don't quite reach 1000fps, but when kept within the reasonable range he sure got the job done with it. Kinda cool

We did see one 50cal bullet manufacturer offering some heavies in the 400-500gr range.

My friend is most interested in 25-30cal

The 22cals can really zing that pellet along FAST. Much faster than any 22lr or even a 22mag. You'd have to get into centerfire 22s to match these 22 air rifles for speed.

I've seen some that shot 45 caliber 230 grain bullets at 950 fps....basically a 1911 in an air rifle... 8)

You are not helping things!
I've been toying with the buying a big bore air gun for years, only thing is which caliber to get. Do I get a 25 and try to use my 60gr 25-20 bullet? Get a 30 cal and buy a mould so I can cast my own? Do I get a 35 and be able to use the molds I have? A 45 and again I have a mould?
Then what gun do I order?
Which compressor to get? Cost of compressor is why I want to pour my own as that cost takes a huge bite out of store bought ammo.
Too many decisions!
Boy I can't wait for your report on the first deer you plunk with that 50!!

Yessir! I recall running the ballistics on a couple of the bigger Bores based on the advertised velocity and some were fairly close to 44mag level.

Crazy how you lose the number of shots on a full as the caliber goes up. If I recall, most of the 50cals state around three shots per fill. But the smaller you can get upwards of 60 shots.

There was one video a guy did a range test of a 30cal that was select fire.

The outfit I have set me back about $850 scope mounts included . The trigger leaves a bit to be desired but it’s usable (over the years I’ve become a trigger snob). And I do more than well enough with it at my self imposed range of 75 yards . My next door neighbor saw this one and decided he needed one . He watched all the YouTube stuff googled etc and bought a different brand 50 cal (the name escapes me) and he paid a skoosh over a grand just for the rifle . Anyway he showed me a couple 100 yard groups he shot with the thing that were easily 1 MOA . I’m skeptical that the thing retains enough energy and or velocity at 100 yards but the fellow that let me shoot his 50 Seneca killed a deer last season at 135 yards so it is what it is

Well, when we take a step back and look at it from a historical perspective, our ancestors took all manner of game with patched round balls from muzzle loading rifles that weren't really packing any more punch than these air rifles. A 50cal round ball only weighs about 180gr and while you may get close to 2000fps with it if youre pushing things, that little 180gr round ball sheds energy quick when it hits the target. On top of that, it seems like a lot of the rifles of those distant yesteryears weren't necessarily 50cal and bigger. Many were sub-50cal.

This advancement in air rifles is as intriguing as it is impressive. Some states have already begun including them as legal implements for big game hunting. NY where I live hasn't caught on yet. We are only permitted the use of air rifles for small game at this time. But I suspect that may change in the not too distant future.

I’d wanted one before but one made by Quackenbush just because I used to own a circa 1890-1900 original Quackenbush spring rifle . But after I sold it this cheaper one will fill the bill .
