When You're Over 60 Years Old...

Post by Old No7 »

Some of you might relate to this...

An older friend of mine once told me how he felt once he turned 60:

"It's like you play a game of tackle football every day.... Some days you get tackled a lot, other days not so much; but you always have some stiffness and nagging aches or pains to deal with... You deal with it, but then you realize -- you haven't played tackle football for over 4 decades!"

Gee, I think I was tackled a lot yesterday.................

I have never played tackle football ... or any other kind. But I have been in horse wrecks ... gotten pitched off a horse a time or three ... or more ... been stepped on, bitten and kicked by a horse and a jackass ... I haven't been 60 for many years now and yes, I am feeling those things.

While livestock farming, got hurt a few times while in close with cattle, especially in the alleys.
Not to mention ear tagging a new calf and mom didn't agree. Had a bull (polled) lift me up a bit, didn't really hurt me but about filled my pants.
Yep, in the card game of life we each play the cards dealt to us.

We were banding calves one day and I had this calf behind me with my right arm holding it's rear and my left arm it's head. I had my left hand holding the calf's mouth shut so he couldn't bawl. His mama was sniffing around behind me when my hand slipped about the time my partner got the band on him and he let out a squall. His mama swatted me like a fly with her head and set me rolling across the pen. Thankfully she hit me in the shoulder. My partner thought it was funny and about fell down laughing. I was just happy she took her baby and left and did not come over to tromp on me a little.

I have to admit I was more traumatized by birthday number 60 than previous birthday numbers, but heck, that's been a dozen years ago and I got over it quickly. Just a number!

Yeah I always wonder which bar I was at, since I wake mentally sluggish and dizzy like I have a hangover, and achy all over like I smarted off to some big dude and got beat up.

For me, a combination of beers, aspirin on occasion and lidocaine patches get me by. This turning 70 business is no fun, and I would advise you younger pups to just say no to it.

Used to use this quite heavily in my younger years then kinda gave it up . Now 60+ aches and pains have made it worthwhile

Yep, I have achieved some notable air time coming off of motorcycles, somewhat less so from horses and atvs. During very short term studies I have found my glide angles to be practically nonexistent despite vigorous in-flight flapping of arms and legs.

Almost didn't make it past 48, turned 55 a couple weeks ago. There are days that the 20+ years in construction and all the damage done by the illness I had make it tough to get through the day. I can't have more than a single Tylenol a day due to the damage done to my internal organs, and no booze at all. Ever. I look at every a gift and try my best not to let rough days get to me.

Back in 1998, I'd just turned 48 and entered a mounted shooting match. Think, barrel racing with guns, blanks, balloons & 2 sixguns. I was on the 4th target in a turn when Ms Poco Flit Bar slipped in the turn and fell. I kicked out of my stirrups trying to decide which way I wanted to escape the worst of the wreck when she jumped back to her feet and took off for target 5. Made that turn and ran down the line of the last targets with feet floppin' and guns firing, surprising a clean fast run. The Mrs was standing at the finish, and in typical Motherly fashion admonished me, "... you're 48 years old, think you're 24 and act like you're 12!" (I'm just glad she wasn't there when I got drug 75 or so yards down a gravel road! Exceedingly tough on shirts and skin!) You know your priorities are right when you worry about how much damage the saddle is gonna take!

Now I'm trying like hell to act like I'm far older than 18! I must be beginning to see her point.

I used to say that. But now that I have accumulated both miles and years I can officially say it isn’t just both of those. The stupidity and invincibility of youth play a very large part.

I turned 60 in October. I don't know where all the time went.

Rodeo, police work and other things when I was a youngster are haunting me now.

But I still think I am as sharp mentally as I ever was and I can live with a few aches and pains. Thank you Lord!

From what I've read so far, the older you get the more something HURTS! I'm about 67 and so far I've got SOME aches and pains, but nothing a beer or two or a shot or two of rum can't take care of.

I told my son some years ago that he was getting older faster than I was... He was 28 when I turned 56, or ½ my age. He's already more than that as he's 44, while I'm 72, just shy of 5/8s! A trend I first noted with my own father! :P :P

I'm a big believer in vacinations. I can't prove that any of them have actually prevented the malady they are intended to prevent. On the other hand no one can prove they haven't.

60 is in the rearview mirror by almost 4 years now, but I still get to spend plenty of time on rooftops and in crawlspaces. and i feel every minute of that for much longer with each passing day...

I would have to be professionally extracted from most crawlspaces. With four fusions, I am so inflexible that I end up grunting and swearing just putting on socks. Would make a great "fail army" Youtube ...
