Winchester Model 1901 10g.

Post by Rube Burrows »

This past weekend I picked up a Model 1901 in 10g. I am looking to find info on loading smokeless rounds for this gun. Not much available online.

I will be using (more than likely) plastic hulls cut down from 3.5” to the required 2 7/8” length.

My 1917 made gun is very sound and shootable.

I would love to find some loads that would work in this gun for both target shooting and duck hunting.

When it comes to shotgun reloading I am fairly new and only load black powder for my original 1887 in brass hulls.

I would be thankful for any pointers or direction you can give. Also open to being pointed in the directions of books or videos.

Thank you.

Over on the Parker Gun Collectors site there is lots of detail on reloading 10 gauge for the 2 7/8 shells. It is in the reloading section. These are low pressure loads. I use them in my damascus 10 gauge double.

Niiice! I'd love to have either one.I am just starting to shop around for black powder shells and or components to roll my own so I can take my Winchester 1893 out hunting.

Good luck. I use black powder in my 87 12g and have had good luck with those rounds. I enjoy the BP rounds but for this one I’d love to find a decent hunting load for the 10g.

Rube, can't help with the load data, but must say I admire your 1901 immensely. Congratulations.

Thank you. I know that many don't like the Winchester Lever Action Shotguns but they are among my favorites.

Another question I have after researching load data for the 2 7/8" 10 gauge.....

How do I find out safe pressures for the Winchester Model 1901?

I have googled and looked other places but haven't found anything yet.

The Parker Forum shows lots of loads for the older Parker Bro guns. I would assume these could handle a little bit more since it was made for smokeless and with fluid steel barrels.

If I am wrong pleaset correct me.

If anyone happens to know a good safe PSI that would be acceptable with these 1901s I would be grateful to be pointed in the right direction. I want to use this for waterfowl and other game but want to be safe.
