Deer Hunting With A Winchester High Wall
This fall has been fairly cold all of November. Getting within range to shoot these old iron sighted guns is the challenge. Here is the result of this morning and stalking in the heavy snowfall. The rifle is a special order Winchester High Wall with double set triggers, shotgun butt, Sling eyes and all in a rare caliber 25-35...

Well done sir!! nice buck with that old gun
So was the bullet a 117 gr.? thats what i have used Hornady or Remington
even the 75 gr. Speer, none of them ever stayed in deer or antelope, 25-35 is a great cartridge
and fun to load for

that's a great picture
Re: Deer Hunting With A Winchester High Wall
Yup, the traditional bullet for the 25-35. All the new guys get all revved up about fast twist and this 127 year old cartridge set the standard by which fast twist is revered today. You can shoot pointed bullets in it, but why? The 117 grain round nose works great…

Wow, awesome rifle, hunt and what a photo .
There was not another deer taken with the old 25-35 or a high wall that day I bet!
Superb

Great buck, with an equally great rifle!
Are my eyes fooling me, or is that also a takedown 1885?

Re: Deer Hunting With A Winchester High Wall
Look at all those s.o. items!. double set trigger, shotgun buttstock, takedown, rare caliber...nice pic too. Never saw one in that caliber...took me 20 years to find a nice '94 SRC in 25-35.....two months ago I picked up a half rd/oct low wall in 32-20 with a #1 barrel. For sure, a back-in-the-day rich guy bought that '85....when was it made?..#3 barrel?-----006

It's good to see the 25-35 still putting meat in the freezer.

Re: Deer Hunting With A Winchester High Wall
It letters as it appears. 25-35 is scarce to begin with, but the addition of set triggers, shotgun butt, sling eyes, #3 barrel and takedown, makes this a seriously rare gun…Sixgun wrote: ↑Thu Nov 24, 2022 7:42 pm Look at all those s.o. items!. double set trigger, shotgun buttstock, takedown, rare caliber...nice pic too. Re: Deer Hunting With A Winchester High Wall
I think the number 3 is standard but heavy for the '85 in 25-35 which adds weight and accuracy. I saw a High Wall deluxe at the Timonium show with a number 4 barrel in .22 short.....the guy who ordered it obviously did not want the gun to move.
Yea, rare bird you have. The only sad thing is we are just temporary custodians of these works of art. Thanks.you have some nice stuff and like me, take em out to shoot and hunt with in any kind of weather....I know a guy in Maine who has half of all the '92 SRC's made with half mags and hunts with a junky post 64 sintered metal 30-30. (Old Win)
Don't know the fascination of the 25-35 but I too, like it. Very pleasant cartridge to shoot....I use the brass to make 219 Zippers as it has a smaller base than the 30-30... Some years back I HAD a '94 rifle in takedown, #38 Lyman, set trigger, no dovetail for a rear sight, trap door butt plate in 98% condition......a few carbines have come my way but except for two SRC's, they have been post war flat bands.
One thing, the 117 Hornady's are iffy on the 200 meter rams....---006

Re: Deer Hunting With A Winchester High Wall
For me the .25 in a bottleneck cartridge was one of the early varmint and deer cartridges, so that's why I like them. My first Marlin levergun was a 1893 in Marlin's .25-36M cartridge. I still own that rifle, and love shooting it. Never did get a chance to take a buck with it, but I have shot it out to 500 yds. and it's accurate enough to take deer at that distance.
