30 inch Savage

Post by KeithNyst »

Thought the folks here would enjoy seeing this one. Savage model 1899B (full octagon) made in 1906 chambered in 30-30. What is unique about this one is the 30" Optional barrel ... very, very few have been seen.

Wow. I knew such existed, but have never seen even a photo that I can recall. It must feel like carrying a broomstick in the woods -- not a bad thing!

.
Seen a 30" heavy-barrel bolt action Savage in 308, but not quite the same historic charm...

Brad
Brad, it lettered as 30" so original; shipped in August of 1906 to a hardware store in St. Paul, MN. I bought just outside of St. Paul, so it did not go far in 116 years.

I love old lever guns with extra length barrels! And as you mentioned a Savage with a barrel over 26" is very rare, and more so in a 30"! Great find!

Very Nice! I don't have any 99s, I'm a Winchester and Marlin Guy, have a few long barrels. Cool!

Grizz, I've only taken it out once so far. I worked up a reduced load of 28.0 grains of H4895 with a Speer 130gr FP. Hodgdon lists the starting load as 31.5 gr, 2248 fps with that bullet in a 24" barrel. My average velocity, 10 shot with the chrono at 15 ft, was 2090 fps.
