Uberti 1860 Henry

Post by Griff »

In 2009 I bought this 1860 Steel-Framed Henry imported by EMF in CA... 45 Colt. I have shot quite a few match with it in the interim. Usually with BP loads... I typically load a 230 TC bullet of approx #2 Lyman alloy with SPG lube. It's never been fast, er... maybe I should admit that I've never been fast shooting it... and since the category I shoot in requires a one handed grip, with my 1851s, that also detracts from any potential speed I might have! Anyway, I've been berated by my fellow cowboy action shooters for my lackadaisical demeanor to what is in all truth a speed game! To the point that after a few too many adult libations I told a couple that I'd give up my meandering ways on the firing line and attempt to shoot a whole match with a more competitive spirit... To that end about a year & 4 months ago I ordered a custom rifle with all the go-fast goodies in it... Who knows... you might could put me in a Ferrari and I'd still be accused of holding up traffic for an analogy.

Well... since the Italians are taking their own sweet time about building this rifle I hope to compete with... I figured I could put some "go-fast" parts in mine and practice... Shudder... ok, if not practice at least familiarize myself with how such a rifle would feel...

So... I ordered a Cowboy45Special carrier from the Smith Shop in MA and a Super Short Stroke kit from Pioneer Gun Works in OR, and massaged my way thru their installation.

I like it! I know that this is a pipe dream, but wouldn't it be cool if we could get a Henry chambered in the .45 Cowboy with a properly sized carrier so that it would be very similar to the size of a real Henry chambered in .44 Henry Flat?

thut, thut, thut, thut, thut, thut, thut, thut, thut, thut. Yep. Seems to work just dandy. Funny, when I started reading your post and you mentioned "1860 in 45 Colt", I was thinking, "That'd be a fun popper in 45 Cowboy Special". So, what kind of ballistics are we talking here? 700's with a 200 gr bullet? That report sure sounds different, makes me curious about what it sounds like in person instead of on video.

Those loads are my handgun loads for cowboy action... 160 powder coated bullet over 3.4 grains of Clays. Hodgdon lists that as a starting load in the 45ACP @ 833 fps out of a 5" bbl. I suspect with the 24-¼ bbl of the 1860 and generous 45 Colt chamber... it might be down a little. Paul, it sounded just about like that... Not quite a 22 LR crack... 8)

Well, Griff, you've gotcher self a nifty plinkin' machine indeed! 160's are lighter than I thought, but the "lack of heavy recoil" (notice the understatement?) and the reasonable velocity would make for a very effective plinker/varminter/defense for recoil shy folk. That low volume on the report is dandy indeed. Who needs a suppressor if you've got a long barreled rifle and fast powder in your loads?

Thank you Paul. I spent the day at a cowboy action match today, and ran about 60 rounds thru it... Flawless. After the match I ran another 5 rounds on a 35 yard steel target (we don't have any paper targets)... That nice heavy bbl makes a fine target rifle. While not really definitive, I pick a corner of the target and put five round into one little, slightly oblong lead smear! I wanna try some levergun silhouette with it... tho'; I really ain't much of a off-hand shooter!
