The April NRA American Hunter has a favorable article on the Uberti 1876.
It is by Phil Spangenberger and should be of interest if you have or want one of these rifles.

Ditto! A great gun, regardless of what PS endorses or not.

OK - I have not read much of Phil's stuff and only recently became aware of him, so have no opinion of his work. Thanks for the comments, tho.
At a list price of $1500.00, the Uberti 1876 should be a good rifle and I am glad to see that he did not mis-represent it.
Strange that with all the shooting mags and books that I read, that the first time I remember Phils name was the time l saw him in a hunting film recently using a lever action rifle improperly - he took it off his shoulder to lever in another round and that caused him to miss an opportunity for a second shot before a wounded animal ducked into the brush. mmmm![Question :?:](./images/smilies/icon_question.gif)

You're lucky Charles, you got the gist of the matter all at one shot. Some of the rest of us had to suffer far longer before we learned
. He was the main writer for "western guns" in Guns and Ammo since Hector was a pup.
Anybody that pays $1500 for a Uberti 76 is getting hosed. That is near a 50% markup. You can negotiate much better.

I'm glad to hear they are going for less. Anyone have one and want to share how it's doing??

I see references to Uberti AND Chapparal as manufacturers of reproduction Winchester M1876s. Is this accurate? If it is, please compare quality -- tolerances, metal and metallurgy -- between the two.
If it is inaccurate, that all the rifles are made by Uberti, are all of the M1876s sold under various brand names of equal quality or is one much better than others?

Regarding the .50-95 WCF, what basis case can be reformed to it?

I own two Taylor 76's both in 45-60. I don't know but I was told when I bought them that Uberti makes all of them to specific finishes and options decided by either Taylor's, Cimaron, or Chapparal. I love mine. One is a bit more accurate than the other but not enough to notice at 75yds. The wood is different from each other as well which is odd because they are only about 1000 apart. If you wish, I could post some pictures. By the way, both of them love the 300grn hard cast PB's.
I have a Chaparral NWMP SRC. Uberti is NOT making the Chaparral guns. Mine seems accurate but, sadly, I've not been able to get to the range to shoot, all my shooting has been over fence posts to test loads for other than accuracy.Naphtali wrote:I see references to Uberti AND Chapparal as manufacturers of reproduction Winchester M1876s. Naphtali, you demand a lot of a short post. I will say that most prefer the Uberti but Uberti doesn't make a carbine. You pays your money and takes your chances. There's lots to read about the 1876 at CAS City. Have a look.

I have to say something here about the '76. Mine is aUberti. I did not like the finish on it so redid it my self. The rear sight was not what I wanted so put on a Winchester rear ladder type sight and a Marbles tang sight. Redid the trigger assembly so that it now breaks at 5 pounds. I now like my rifle. I had a Chapparal and sent it back as it was a JOKE!
My rifle likes Swiss 1½ and 2400 the best. I use a Hoch custom nose-pour mold that casts a perfect 350 grain bullet using the 20:1 alloy.
So, now that I got that off my chest, I have a relative that has an original '76 in 45-60 and between the two, the only difference is AGE as they both perform as they should.![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

For most of the writers for most of the major gun magazines, do any of them bite the hands that feed them? Gun Tests is the only one I know that isn't afraid to let a manufacturer have it if they find problems...
