They are nice tins for many things but making tinder is great. Then there is first aid kits, sewing kits and on and on. I have taught and started a LOT of fires with flint and steel and I make a lot of char.
I don`t dabble in ML things much anymore but i do have a possibles bag ect ready to go if need be, maybe you seen it when you were here it has a knife made from a sheep shear.
Good to see ya Brad hows Hilda doing.

Lenn, a while back some of the boys on the muzzleloading forums took these and put them in a fire to burn off the paint, then very carefully hammered the lid with a small ballpeen or jeweler's hammer to dome the lid. Looked mighty old-timey. I thought I still had a couple around the place, but can't find them. Typical.
I seen something like that online Bill, they also make small stoves with them.

When my son was in boy scouts we made these as a project using PVC tubing with end caps on about 3"-4" long .
We had fishing line ,hooks,sinkers,9volt battery ,steel wool ,dryer lint ,
They float and are water proof.
Good idea Pat, i hate like buttons Bill on a board takes the conversation away from the board, people don`t reply enough as it is.

Some knives along with an appropriate rock are decent flint and steel. Char cloth is an almost forgotten item other than among people who hunt with muzzleloaders nowadays. Sounds like a a good idea for a manure impacts the spinning wind producing machine situation.

I spent way too nours watching different ways to use these tins. I plan on making char cloth this spring. For now i just store waxed and vaselined cotton balls in mine.with a 5/16" ferro rod and striker. They do keep crushable items intact tho when putting them inbackpacks or panniers
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Or, you can save your dryer lint in a plastic bag with your fire rod. Mine has the metal striker on a loop with the rod.
Blain. The only problem with dryer lint is you have to be sure of your fabric softener. Some of it has fire retarders for baby cloths and such. The lint doesn't burn very well.
