New Acquisition
Got a gun in today I bought from an auction in Long Island NY . Gun was advertised as a DH 10 gauge with 34” barrels . So me being the 10 gauge aficionado I seem to have become I looked at it closer . The wrist looked awful fat in the pictures so I’m thinking #6 frame 10 . When I got home I looked it up in the serialization book and was surprised to see it shown as an 8 gauge . So the following day I called the auction house talked with the auctioneer himself and asked a bunch of questions . On face , tight , rang true , 6 on the bottom of the barrel lug . So after I got off the phone I ordered a letter from the Chuckster . Letter arrived and all matched up with NO mention of 10 gauge replacement barrels . So for the last seven days I’ve been sweating this one getting here and turning out to be as listed a 10 gauge . And as fate would have it my original thoughts that it just might turn out to actually be an 8 came true . Eighteen months ago I had no 8 gauge now there are four in my somewhat modest accumulation .

Re: New Acquisition
So "WHO" Doesn't have at least four 8 ga shotguns . ..... . I'm glad to watch as I don't have to feed those big shells.
Re: New Acquisition
This guns feels kinda nice in the hands like the PH 8 I already had . The pair of hammer guns have more drop in the stock and weigh more so they don’t feel as nice to shoulder etc .

No , I had the perfect opportunity at the auction in Easton MD and didn’t . The 8’s are big enough for me .

Re: New Acquisition
I’m going to a Pheasent partridge shoot in WVA Saturday but won’t have a cart to carry two guns and shells . So the guy putting on the shoots is letting me shoot the first peg with the new to me 8 and leave it and shells in his car then go around with a regular gun . I’m not up for jumping all that stuff all the way around the circle .

Re: New Acquisition
Shot some 000000 buck in the new to me DH 8 today at thirty yards . Ten of the .415” pellets is a pretty decent payload . The right barrel was right on time all ten pellets on paper and pretty near point of aim . Left barrel had nine pellets on paper just a skoosh left and high . I keep test pictures on my phone so if I’m out sitting a treestand I can refresh my memory on wear they hit when fired off the bench .Also I shot .785” and .795” masking tape patched punkin balls in it as well . They weren’t very positive although all stayed on paper at thirty yards . The masking tape is a twofold deal . Firstly it tightens the balls some in the bore and secondly it cuts down on the lead smudge drag marks in the bore .

Re: New Acquisition
I’ve got three friends that have three or more 8’s . I’m not the lowest total and I’m not the highest total either . Strangely I’m not overly intrested in trying to get a Lefever 8 or an LC Smith 8 . The Parker’s are more than sufficient for me .

Re: New Acquisition
FWIW , there was a gentleman in NJ I believe it was that had 40+ 8 gauge guns . Some Parker’s , some Lefever’s and the most LC Smith’s anyone ever accumulated , as well as plenty Euro and Brit 8’s . He also had a bunch of 4 gauge breech loaders . Sorry to say this gentleman left this earth about four years ago .

Re: New Acquisition
good grief , more than 40! i have bid on 8 gauges many times but never got one, still trying. i did have a very fine english 6 bore muzzle loader[ percussion] side by side, eventually sold it to a nationally known vintage side by side dealer, who was going to use a bit but also keep it for display.

Re: New Acquisition
The auction I purchased the hammer 8 at about 40 days ago also had a single barrel 4 gauge side hammer jones underlever gun with I think 40 or 42 inch barrel . It went for $1500 and was I think 4 lots ahead of the Parker 8 . I had thoughts of buying the 4 gauge but was scared it would take enough of my meager funds where I couldn't buy the Parker . And in hindsight I'd have needed to find 4 gauge hulls which I am sure are a brass only deal . I have load data for 4 gauge as it's in Tom Armbrusts book . But already loading for the 8-10-12-16-20-28 and 410 as well as thirty or so rifle cartridges I have enough to do .hfcable wrote: ↑Fri Dec 17, 2021 10:17 am good grief , more than 40! i have bid on 8 gauges many times but never got one, still trying. i did have a very fine english 6 bore muzzle loader[ percussion] side by side, eventually sold it to a nationally known vintage side by side dealer, who was going to use a bit but also keep it for display.

Re: New Acquisition
in a very obscure auction some years ago, i won a whole box of 100 unfired 4 gauge paper shells, even the box was mostly intact. kept it for a while, and finally put it on ebay.... got bid up to many, many times what i paid for it..... of course it would probably be worth even more now.6pt-sika wrote: ↑Fri Dec 17, 2021 11:08 amThe auction I purchased the hammer 8 at about 40 days ago also had a single barrel 4 gauge side hammer jones underlever gun with I think 40 or 42 inch barrel . Re: New Acquisition
Ten 000000 buck can do a pretty decent job . That’s a PH grade gun not the DH . Thst deer caught 8 or 9 of the ten pellets . They took out both lungs the heart and the offside shoulder and he still made it 30-40 yards dead on his feet .

Re: New Acquisition
Carried the DH 8 to WVA today for a Pheasent/partridge/pigeon shoot today . Didn’t have access to a sporting clays cart so only had the 8 at the first peg then I put the gun in someone car and used another gun for the other ten pegs . Sorry to say nothing flew close enough to shoot at on the first peg . Maybe next year as he said this was most likely the last shoot of this kind until October 2022 .

Re: New Acquisition
That's a fascinating gun, 6-pt. How much does it weigh? Is commercial ammunition available or are you shooting handloads?
Re: New Acquisition
They say RST will start loading 8 gauge when components are more readily available. Estimated cost will be $5@ shot . I handload for all gauge 8-10-12-16-20-28-410 . I’ve not weighed this gun on the scale at the shop but it’s most likely around 12 pounds , it’s no where near as heavy as either of the hammer 8’s in my accumulation but feels about the same as the PH in the picture above with the deer .Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Sun Dec 19, 2021 7:39 am That's a fascinating gun, 6-pt. The ones I’ve been casting in the two single cavity Tanner molds are .415” , however today I recieved the Marty’s Mold I bought on EBay . I don’t think he shot any of at all the last 7 or 8 years of his life . The gentleman had lung cancer and was on oxegen and half the time a wheelchair the last 7 or 8 years of his life . I don’t think he was over 70 when he passed .Ysabel Kid wrote: ↑Mon Dec 20, 2021 10:41 pmProbably from shooting the 4 gauge too much!6pt-sika wrote: ↑Thu Dec 16, 2021 11:19 pm FWIW , there was a gentleman in NJ I believe it was that had 40+ 8 gauge guns . Re: New Acquisition
I was wrong this guy had EIGHTY , 8 gauge guns and I think they said TWENTY 4 gauge . I also recently found out his widow has decided to start letting them go . I know in the accumulation there is one of the four or five Parker CH grade 8’s and I was told he had I think twelve of the LC Smith 8’s of which they supposedly only made about fifty .

Re: New Acquisition
Problem with this is if they try to liquidate them all at once the market will certainly be flooded and prices dropped .

Re: New Acquisition
The Parker CH 8 I mentioned earlier is priced at 50K . But as I said the gun is one of four but again I was wrong actually six CH grade 8’s but of the six only two are fluid steel and this gun happens to be one of those two .

Re: New Acquisition
Beautiful shotgun and great job on the deer.
Re: New Acquisition
That DH 8 will be taken apart Thursday . The barrels going to a friends and barrel finisher in SC . The action and buttstock are heading to another friend gunsmith in NY to have a thin Silvers pad attached to the original Silvers “bake-a-lite” baseplate . At the Southern in April after the friendly 8 gauge event I may give the entire gun to my NY friend for him to take with him and tighten it up (guns a tiny bit loose) , clean the action and refinish the wood to bring the figure out . Over the years that gun absorbed A LOT of linseed oil in the wood . So as advised I cleaned it a few days using acetone and then I’ve rubbed in about eight coats of Brownells Tung Oil . But it doesn’t have the sheen or shine desired , so perhaps a professional should get involved .

Re: New Acquisition
I’ve still not tried the Marty’s mold for 000000 buck . I did however shortly after acquiring that one order two four cavity .410” molds from the Russian Federation thru Fleabay . The Marty’s mold has 16 cavities but I’ll need to trim sprues then roll before I’ll be satisfied enough to load them (I’m kinda anal about sprue knots) . The two Rooskie molds only cast four per mold however they have sprue plates to shave the sprue off at what appears to be close enough so no sprue knots and no need to roll them . Got a Pheasent deal Saturday and it’s supposed to snow here Sunday but we will see . Incidentally the Rooskie molds got here in 14 days from the moment I bought and paid for them , they said anticipate an almost two month turn around .

On a side note of sorts Marty’s Molds had these on Fleabay also so I got one to hopefully use in the 10 gauge guns .

Got the barrels back from Breck Gorman in SC after he brought the damascus pattern back out . Earlier Brian Dudley in NY had bonded a new Silvers pad to the original 1902 baseplate . And here’s the finished result !
