FREE TO THE FIRST WHO WANTS 'EM

Post by JimT »

I have 4 Palm Trees that I will give to whoever wants them.
One is 12 feet , one is 9 1/2 feet and 2 are 7 feet tall.
They were killed in the Snowpocalypse that we had here in Texas early this year.
We have cut them off at ground level and they are now laying in by the fence on the back 40. We do need to get rid of them.
Whoever wants them, come and get 'em.
We will help you load them.
The big one weighs around a ton.
I could not move it with a 15 HP yard tractor.
Had to hook the 4WD Dodge RAM to it to drag it off.

FIRST COME FIRST SERVED!
DON'T DELAY.

And don't ask for photos please!

I cut a couple down for Shirley, yes we do have 'em down South, they dulled the blade on my chainsaw, couldn't find any use for 'em and the buggers keep sprouting from the stumps...

You're right, Jim. Not terribly useful fiber, but if you want to weave a hammock or make wicker furniture ...
Here are the uses of wood from palm trees:

Making hammocks
Along coastlines, you’ll find hammocks hung on live trees, some of them palm trees of all kinds, such as coconuts. Well, that’s not the only use of palm tree trunks.

The fiber made from the trunks of palm trees and their wood is also used as a raw material for weaving out hammocks. When woven, it is strong, durable, and offers a unique appearance of a natural material.

Making hats
The reed-like fibrous structure of palm tree wood makes for great material for weaving traditional clothing. Sun hats, for example, are some of the most common outfits made from the strands made from these trees.

Fireplace firewood
As already discussed above, palm trees can also make firewood even though its quality is not very admirable.

However, in communities where these trees are in plenty and readily available, chopping the trunks and drying the pieces out produces firewood that can be mixed with high density wood for fireplace use.

Making wicker furniture
Some palm trees have characteristically flexible woody stems that make them climb instead of growing like the usual palm tree. Rattan palm trees are a good example of this type of trees, which produce wood that’s used to make rattan furniture.

In places where rattan palms grow, their wood is mainly used to make baskets and furniture, also called wicker furniture.

Wicker furniture is the kind that’s woven, that’s why this particular type of palm tree wood is preferred due to its flexibility.

I have a good backstop on my personal shooting range. Two stacks of Union Pacific railroad ties stacked parallel and 3 feet of dirt and rock shoveled in between the stacks.

A man of your stature and bearing really ought to have a totem pole. I can hunt around find an old pocket knife to donate toward completion of this important project. Might have some rust and a broken blade.

Thanks Sarge. I found that one can use the fibers of the Palm to weave hats or baskets. If you have a nice, agreeable, unattached lady in her 60's that knows how to weave hats from Palm fibers I would rather have you send her. The knife is a good thought .. don't get depressed over me not wanting it all that badly. But i think hats and baskets and maybe mats would sell better than a totem.

The fibers are used to make baskets and hats. The palm fronds were used for roofing - at least in Mozambique.

It is mostly fibers. Dense fibers. Clogs a chainsaw quickly.
If no one will take these I may have to drop them off at a site where the gummint is mulching up brush and trees.
If I can do it quickly, I would like to park someplace nearby to see what the consequences of running a palm tree through a wood chipper is. Just for the science, of course.

Yessir JB. Shipping is available.
There is a large group of shippers who regularly ship organic material from Mexico all over the US.
You will need to go to Nogales or Tijuana and organize it though.
One incentive you can offer, they won't have to get 'em past Customs!
