Wish me luck, boys

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Headed for El Paso tomorrow and will stay in a motel in order to report for back surgery at 6 a.m. Monday. This will be my fourth rodeo and my fourth lumbar fusion, this one L5-S1. L-5 is sliding forward and pinching my spinal cord right where it splits in two and travels down the legs. My legs have been going so numb I can't feel them and I have to sit down or fall down. Needless to say, this has cut into my hiking. Good thoughts would be highly appreciated.

Prayers up. When the recovery process gets painful and discouraging, just keep thinking of the hikes you will be able to take once you get your strength back. That will be very motivating.

Thanks fellers. Means a lot on the eve of another surgery. My guy is Dr. George Martin, who uses the Mazor Robotics system to help make the most precise cuts and locate the spots for the pedicle screws and rods. He's going in through my back, thank gosh, as the alternative approach for L5-S1 is through the abdomen.
The robotics system is pretty amazing. Be fun to watch -- maybe.

A good back surgeon saved my life a few years ago: I didn't know what pain was until the old sciatic nerve started getting pushed around. Good luck Bill! -- pulling hard for you from up here in the middle of Oregon.

That's a good thing. Use it until you don't need it any more. Listen to your physical therapist - and do what they tell you.

Meantime, we're in your corner praying with you about it.

for me. what worked best after major back surgeries was to be up and on my feet as much as i could tolerate....sounds wrong, but it isnt -- the soreness and pain diminshed fast for me , doing that.

I was amazed at how quickly they got my mother-in-law to exercising after she had surgery for a broken leg, and then a few months later for a knee replacement and then the other knee. Each time it seemed that they barely let her get out of sedation before putting her to work. She was up and at 'em in no time at all it seemed. And she's still very faithful in her exercises to keep flexible and mobile. I assume it's the same for the back as well, or other such surgeries. We've come a long way from being immobile for weeks at a time while our muscles atrophied followed by long, slow PT to recoup.
