Boiled linseed oil, tung oil, varnish, linspeed . there was a product by Varathane called Flecto 66. It was a blend of oils that penetrated, got rock hard and was the choice of my stock making mentor and friend- Ed Shulin may he rest in peace.

A whole barrel of them? Even the Mighty Kubota would have to strain a little to pick up that weight.

I was telling Jay Bird about that retarded couple from California that found all that gold a few years back and how they reported it and drew attention to themselves. .....heck, I would have kept my mouth shut and sold em off one a a time in all fifty states.---006
Re: Chairman of the.......politically incorrect
Woooooo! That is a smokin' Colt! How'd I miss that? I'll be down to pick up Thursday. Tomorrow I have to do a fiddlehead recon mission.
Yup......it's that time again boys.
Believe it or not, my old buddy with the gun shop had one of those super rare 44 Russian Colts. It was a 7.5" and real minty. It was being used as a paper weight in a lawers office in Madison. He sold it years later for good money, but nothing like it would be worth now.

$20 double eagles are quite valuable! Anywhere from about $2500 & up per coin! Thats a lot of kibble by the drum full!
Its not junk Six. Tru oil is easy for the common man( no offense Jay ) to use, fast drying. Sure it gets a bit glossy- there are ways around that though. Tung oil is very good stuff, longer dry times. I learnt to use a 50/50 mix of tru oil & mineral spirits to fill grain. Then cut back until all grain is filled then use another product to top coat, building finish as desired. I still use the same process.

Hey Gunnert.....yea, I knows dat....on the Tru Oil...it Is good stuff....but......after you use Formblys tung oil you will forget about False Oil. It comes in gloss or satin and its nothing more than hand rubbed varnish. Usually takes more coats to fill in than Tru Earl does.
Yes Jayster...look at the factory letter and who it was sold to...THE famous John W. Hession, Marine Corp Wimbledon Cup and Olympic shooter......there's a typo on the factory records and NRA told me there's no doubt that it was Hession and not Hissian. They did a census check and some other stuff...
ANYWAY......what do you do with a pair of $325 Redwings that you bought new in 2011, been wearing them near everyday except funerals and weddings and I don't go to weddings......that start to leak? These have Gor Tex but I've worn them so many times, miles, and every kind of weather one of them is starting to get a small leak when I was working in the swamp....
I hate like hell to start wearing my other two new pairs because I might need them one day,so I'm saving them.

Re: Chairman of the.......politically incorrect
Ok, so I got this 94 carbine made in 68 from my uncle. It's hardly been fired but the wood looked gross. GROSS. I don't know what it is but it's nasty. Birch or beech, maybe.
Those early post 64 carbines are really cheap. Anyway, I use it for a truck and Jeep rifle. Some of the finish was completely gone from it so I decided to get it covered.
I did this same thing to an 870 Express one time and didn't care for how it came out. It didn't stain even and I was just never happy with it.
I read some before I did this one and a guy online who did a lot of military stocks said that an alcohol based leather dye is the way to go with these stocks. Then just Tru-oil over it till you get what you want. I'd never heard of this, but figured I'd give it a try.
I stripped it with Citri-strip, then just steel wooled it. Didn't do any sanding.
When that dye hit it I asked myself what I was thinking. It said medium brown, but was blood red when it hit. When it rubbed in it looked more like it should.
Then, being an unsophisticated hick , I put on 3 coats of Tru-oil with 4-ought steel wool buffs in between.
Here are the before, after stain, and final pics.
I figure it ain't professional, but looks a lot better than it did. Just wondering if you guys had heard of the leather dye thing?

Re: Chairman of the.......politically incorrect
Jay....looks pretty good bro.....a lot better.......You could put that for sale down in New Orleans in the pimp ads, right next to the ads for nickel plated .32's with pearl grips. As you say, "just hackin' on ya"
For real, it looks pretty good and this is just a suggestion. The leather dye does work but this stain works better...it's alcohol based and a quick swipe will make it just a tad darker...each successive swipe will darken it. For doing a military stock there is nothing comparable.....same goes for Winchester stocks but you only do it once...read the label...."just a hint of red".
The Formblys is a tung oil with a satin finish...not all shiny.......nothing personal bro but extreme shine looks like, well, too shiny...if you like you could hit it again using 4-0 that's wet with your true oil ...scrub it lightly then wipe it off....it will not be as shiny...your call as I know you have some time in that nice job and you probably want to leave it as is, which is fine.
Mr coat wannabe.

Re: Chairman of the.......politically incorrect
Haha thanks buddy. I've heard of Formbly's but haven't used it.
Yeah, I've put on the tru oil and buffed with 4-0 twice. This was the third and I haven't touched it yet. I will probably buff it some to break that shine though.
It is kinda pimpy
Then again, that shiny black receiver is too!
God those years of 94 are ugly. Seems to shoot ok though.

Oh! On the boots......GUNNY WINS! If you look at the picture you will see about 5 coats of black flex seal around the sole area....I'd spray, let it sit for 15 minutes then do it again. Gonna test those babies out tomorrow.

It was easy Piller.....I get the National Geographic magazine and the pic was in there. Remember that? When we were kids pictures of nude Africans was not considered porn? That really is sad as they were looked upon by the intellectuals as "beneath white people".---006
Gunny will be up in another two hours and he gets to work in 90 degree heat tomorrow while I sleep in till noon then leisurely have my coffee outside with my iPad and four eggs and toast, under the canopy with a fan on.

Re: Chairman of the.......politically incorrect
Any wood working supply house, Rockler.com, will have the alcohol stains. Good thing is there are LOTS of different colors- mix & match as you desire. Those beech stocks just suck for grain and decent colors. If I had known you were doing this project I would have suggested a Fume Box. You make an airtight box and put the wood in with a container of ammonia. The fumes turn the wood dark brown to black, depending on time. Then just top coat.
Now you have the final top coat of truoil on it break out a can of rubbing compound and that will cut the sheen and smooth the finish. It looks good though!
Only 83 here today, possible thunderstorms. Replacing some windows and doors today, under a porch roof- no direct sun or rain... These people have chickens so maybe eggs too!

Thanks Gunny. I read about all kinds of processes people use.
But here is the thing.......
I'm a lazy bum...... this was quick and easy......and even though it isn't the case anymore, to me this was a $150 Winchester.
For my Jeep and banging around rifle, it is fine. I had just never heard of the leather dye thing. I got the bottle on Amazon for like $8.
My son has a twin to this carbine he packs 24-7 in Alaska. I have carried it there too. It takes a terrible beating and he will need to do his over soon.

We have spoke of Cerakote for these era 94s. It is probably the only option cause they can't be blued.
I saw one one time a guy had Np3'd that looked kinda cool too.

It doe not have to look nice to work.....I said on another post I have an old model Ruger .22 and except for brief periods it stays outside and has stayed outside since I bought it in '76 or so.....hanging on a nail.
Gunny...thank you for your expertise on the fume box....never heard of it but I sure could have used that technology on a Chinese SKS stock.....have no idea what kind of wood it is...looks like apple wood and it will not take a stain.....I'm going back at least 30 years at a time I didn't know about alcohol based stains.
Like most old people I've been living in the past...hardly shoot..hardly experiment with the guns....stay at home....used to work on guns every chance I had......I'm about ready for the casket.
Always wonder why the sheets on the bed turn dark brown after I wash them.....it must be some kind of an incognito "fume box".
With the kids gone and most of our dogs dead the house is quiet now. I got up an hour ago, walked in the kitchen to turn on the coffee machine (moms still sleeping) and blasted one...and it was a long deep throated one, kind of like rolling thunder on steroids.......never knew it could be so loud and forceful.
Hot....almost 90

Six, I've never tried the fuming technique, only read about it. Other old time things to try, vinegar and iron filings( steel wool works), let it soak a few days and ya get a brown color stain. Iodine is another, but its kinda greenish/brown.
I tried flexseal on neoprene waders, it didn't work I guess because of it being too flexible of a substrate.
I only mentioned cerracote for the rust prevention being as he is in Alaska. Heck for a bush gun plain old krylon spray paint would be good enough. Oh look I scratched it up in the alders- quick touch up and 15 minutes later its good to go!
I bet you I can get that Winchester to blue! Trick is NOT to use hot salt blue tank.

I knew of a company that was acrylic impregnating gun stocks. They too your stock and put it in a vacuum which pulled the acrylic into every pore of the wood. Wanna talk stable? Impervious to weather- ya cant beat plastic wood, only downside was the added weight of the acrylic.

Almost 90!?
It was maybe 65 here and felt like summer. Took the boat down to the river to check on fiddleheads. Still a little early. We scrounged enough for a good meal. Hard to judge cause the weather has been weird. It is about 2.5 weeks early for them normally.
Yesterday I pulled the front driveshaft off Old Red. Time to rebuild the double cardan and centering ball. I think I'm going to replace the output yoke too.
Played with the pinion angle on the Rubicon this afternoon. I dialed out 2 degrees but figured it was being optimistic. Yup. Test ride revealed some vibes. I dialed
out a degree and it was good. So hey, I gained one degree anyway.
Then I cleaned up my new to me drill press. Looks pretty good now.
Not a bad day all around.

Jay and Gunny....you guys created a monster here. Mom is interested in these fiddlebacks......is this anything that grows around here? Is it a water thing from the northern lands. Hopefully, these things don't grow around here.
We have this uppity Whole Foods store that has all this organic foods....like a single banana is $37.95. Every other day I hear, "I'm going to Whole Foods." ......after going there she stops at Chick Fillet and comes back with a bucket of chicken. They might have these fiddle things.....

Re: Chairman of the.......politically incorrect
I'd send you some but I don't think they'd survive the trip.
I don't know if you guys have them down there or not. They are fussy as to where they grow here. Usually along rivers and streams in areas that flood in high water. Usually ground with a lot of silt deposits. When the ground warms up enough after the water goes down, they poke up in cluster from a root ball of sorts.
I live along the Kennebec River watershed. We have them here in spots.
Further east is the Penobscot river and its feeders and drainage. I think they are better along that watershed for some reason. Who knows why?
People picked it up from the Indians, who gathered them for a food source back in the day.
You just boil them for a few minutes until they are cooked. I put vinegar and salt on em. Many use butter. Tonight the wife tried Italian dressing for the first time. She said it was great. She's a whacko!

Yes. Just an immature fern. An Ostrich fern I believe. There are many types, but the Ostrich is the only one I know of that is edible. Some look like them but have a white fuzz. Those will make you sick I think, but I've heard they taste awful anyway.

I haven't seen ferns down here. Probably too hot and the clay soil probably gets too dry in the summer. We have people who eat the leaves of cactus here. They are called nopalitas. Make sure you get the spines off.

I bet there ain't! Hottern hades down there! No cactus here buddy! I'd like to see the southwest someday though.
So different from here. Wouldn't care for the heat, but I'd like the dry.

Thank you Mr Jayster! Pretty much excludes me from spending time looking for them. .....then mom tells me about the Brandywine Creek where some stupid battle took place 240 years ago and she used to ride horses alone the trails next to it. She says she saw those fern things all da time but I think she knows nuttin'.

Not sure of the species I have here. Not as water located, I'm on top of a hill here and the only water they see is rain from above ( or a bladder) . Anyhow, these grow mostly in shaded areas but I have some in the yard that get full sun. In your area look in the woods, preferably in old growth. They don't do much for the ecology of the land but they are appealing to the eye.

Looks like they do grow in Six land too. It shows quite a range for them actually. I know here it's about finding a spot where they grow thick to make for productive picking.

Wooodoggie look at that radar! We are about to get dumped on! We worked until the radar took a turn for the worse. Really didn't want to start removing windows with the threat of rain & wind!

Hey guys....well, where do we start?....mmmmmmm....I'm gettin's e education on these fiddle thingy' ....I'm thinking they mostly grow in WOKE areas where everyone plays da fiddle......Charlie Daniels had a whoooooolllleee field of them. Good ole Charlie would make "them" carry the fiddles on their "backs."
I am going to look for some today as I see these fern things all the time but I just can't remember where I see them. We do have plenty of old growth areas where no one goes except Gods creatures.....
Some things you learn too late in life to really enjoy them.....just gonna add fiddlebacks to spray paint cans.....
Speaking of spray paint I bought 10 cans yesterday.....all kinds of crazy colors.......I've since been painting my hatchets and other small tools yellow so I can find them....hope DeWalt don't get mad....
Had another blue paint can blow up the other night.....this can must have been 30 years old and was full but was clogged. I knew when I started to drill it with a 3/4 regular drill bit that I had to work fast as you need to let the pressure out fast. I had my rags all ready and turned the drill press on 3500 rpm's and as soon as it broke through it flew out of my hand and blue paint everywhere. I should have just shot the top with a .22 ......
Ahhh.forget it
