Prayer request for my Dad. Update.

Post by piller »

My 91 year old Dad broke his hip and fell yesterday while outside in the backyard. He was given a blood thinner of some type in the ER, and must wait until Tuesday for Surgery to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding. He has osteoporosis.
I don't know much else. My Mother is also elderly, and she is not one to ask questions. He is on morphine in his IV. No Patient Controlled Anesthesia in a pain pump. He would be the type to not use it even when he needs it.

Tuesday 4/27
He is out of surgery. It all seemed to go well. My Mom said she had no idea what the Doctor was telling her. Dad was given an epidural, and is numb from the waist down. She said the Doctor was speaking just too fast to understand, and he did not give her a chance to ask questions.

Sir, I'm very sorry for your Father's injury and hope he heals well and recovers soon!
I also wish the best for your mother and you as well. If you can't visit, perhaps you
can get a call in to speak with him before surgery. The nurses' station on the ward where
he is could probably help with that, if you don't have a direct line to his bedside.
Prayers sent for your father and your family! Please let us know how it goes, and we
will be thinking of you!

Prayers Up...... good that they have Him on morphine. I was in the hospital many years ago for three weeks , and if I could get it for pain it would be my drug of choice.

Hi Pillar, really sorry to learn this. Hip breaks in the elderly are very serious as you know. Will say prayers for him and your family. In the Eastern and Western Catholic faith we pray for people by name. What is his first name? -Tutt

Same here, GK! Some doctors are just better communicators just like any other field. All that time I spent in the ICU a few years ago, I was very happy when one rotated out and new Doc took over for his two weeks. Wonderful man and just did everything he could to get me on the way to recovery.

All our best to your family!

Prayers for Roscoe my friend! Keep us posted. The doctor may have decent communication skills, the elderly often need extra time to process things. Those epidurals tend to hurt for a while at the injection point. Hope they keep him comfortable. -Tutt

I was on the phone with my Mom. My Dad started trying to take out all the IV and other things. Mom was told to go home. They were going to sedate him. I am guessing that several things were combining to cause an altered mental status. The realization that he is going to need to be in a wheelchair for a little time, need to use a walker -and he HATES walkers, that he has to depend on others for a while, and the reaction from the anesthesia and whatever pain medicine he is on. I wish I could be there, but with the HIPAA law, I would not be able to do anything.

flight reaction. understandable. could your Mom get you cleared for medical info? My MIL passed last year and the sisters were all getting the Dr and Nurse info. Or if your Dad said yes...

sorry for the sorrows and anxiety. i'm praying for Jesus to outwit the doctors and stand your Dad up healed.

I will try that. Mom is just overwhelmed. She has never once in her life been by herself. From a triplet with both sisters at home at 18 years old to marriage to 5 kids to just her and Dad and 63 years of marriage. I think she is scared right now and not wanting to accept the new situation. I think they are both feeling a sudden loss of independence and control.

That's a tough place to be. We just started buying a place of our own, with a downstairs bedroom for when the probably inevitable time comes for my in-laws. They're still fiercely independent, but time creeps on and the odds are on us needing that room "one of these days".

Brian, I am so sorry this is all coming so hard and fast at your Mom and Dad. Praying that it is God's will that they find their way through this. You are right that the huge change that has suddenly come into their lives has them confused and frightened. Hope they can recover their balance and find a way through it.
