New Hawg-Leg?

Post by HaroldB »

I just saw Micheal Bane's coverage of NRA gun show. He showed a New Hawg-Leg pistol caliber lever-action being introduced. He didn't pronounce the company name correctly or give prices.
It's not the $3,000 custom job from Alaska either.

So who makes it? Web-site?

Thanks.

Interesting video. That Mare's Leg is in the Armi Sport catalog. 8)

I'm glad he mentioned Steve McQueen's 45/70 shells not fitting his Mare's Leg. I aways smile when I see films with Mexican bandits carrying Model 92 carbines and bandoleers of Mauser(?) ammo!

Nice link to Armi Sport web pagehttp://www.armisport.com/eng/dettaglioA ... miglia=65#.What is nice about the Armi Sport version is that the ATF (USA) has classified it as a new manufactured Pistol. 8)

Exactly. I handled this while at the NRA show and asked one of the booth reps about sales in the USA. No issues since it was manufactured as a handgun.

Not sure this is practical for anything - but it is really cool! 8)

Sure it's practical! I'm sure there are TONS of practical uses for it. Just buy me one, and I'll be sure to hunt up each and every one!

I just wish to hell they'd make them at a decent price. I'm not gonna spend that kinda dough on a toy.

I'm not sure on the exact price on the Mare's Leg from Chiappa but the going price for the Rio Bravo Model 92 is around $800.00. I've even seen it for as low as $640.00. The price on the Mare's Leg from Chiappa should be less than the $1500.00 from JB Custom. The JB Custom is a Rossi made item. There's a guy in California that makes custom one's also but they are made from original Winchester 1892's and go for around $2500.00. But those are considered SBR and require ATF paperwork.

http://www.armisport.com/ita/dettaglioA ... amiglia=65

We have to wait and see who is going to import them. Might be Cimarron, Taylor, EMF, ???.

I wouldn't mind having one if the prices are reasonable. You know it would probably be cheaper to pick up a used Rossi and convert it yourself. The price for a SBR is around 200 bucks, I think. It's been a while since I've researched it.

I asked at the Marlin, Remington (since they bought Marlin), Winchester, and Legacy booths, just to see how they'd respond to the idea of making a larger bore compact levergun. Something like a Win92 or Mar94 only scaled up "just enough" to stoke it with 500 S&W's. Winchester seemed more interested in survival, Marlin implied they're not going to rock the boat during the transition, Remington hinted they'd take a look at what customers wanted, and Legacy/Puma DID seem to express interest, but said that right now, they can't afford to divert production one bit, as they are struggling to meet demand.

How does one exactly use a gun such as this? I ask out of curiosity, it seems it would be awkward. Any photos of people shooting this sort of gun?

I am of the opinion that one shoots such a thing one does not use it. Shooting is easy, just do as you would do when shooting from the hip. Using is a non-issue.
Sincerely,

For really serious shooting.

Looks like a lot of fun. Since I'm sure there would be a market for it I'm not sure why it importers aren't jumping at it (especially since there wouldn't be the cut-down-rifle issue).

..... or why a certain '92 specialist doesn't buy a crate full of receivers, and build them at a reasonable price? Hint, hint! (I'd be willing to "field test" a few.)

I could really see a use for one of those, slung over my saddlehorn in a scabbard made from an old boot top. Perfect for when I'm out horseback and jump a coyote, and can get a quick snap shot off.

vvvvI'd also see a use for one in .460, if I ever go back to outfitting. Packing out bloody meat on a prey animal is tantamount to trolling for Grizzlies!

Hmm, short barrel = useful in some circumstances, certainly. Big loop, not for me, unless in a climate where mittens are commonly worn. Sawn stock? No, thanks, I want enough stock to at least use as a stabilizer against my side, and even better, enough stock for normal rifle-style shooting, which enhances working the lever quickly and smoothly.

Of course, Steve McQueen = Cool, regardless. :)

As an interesting side note, before Gov. "W." Bush signed the CHL bill, there was virtually no legal open or concealed carry of handguns in Texas, but long guns, including SBRs and AOWs made from same, could be carried, openly or concealed, loaded or not. So, a Mare's Leg made from a rifle could be a "rule booker" carry gun for SOME jurisdictions to this day, making it very practical for folks there.

OTOH, a Mare's Leg made as a handgun could be a rule booker for jurisdictions which allow loaded and/or concealed handguns, but prohibit loaded and/or concealed rifles. In such a circumstance, I just might want something like a Mare's Leg with the maximum-permissible amount of wood on the hind end.

I am open-minded about such things. My first firearm was a folding-stock Uzi Carbine, of all things, and it was a dandy concealed weapon for vehicular travel in Texas before I wore a badge, which was also before legal handgun CCW in Texas.
Have Colts, will travel.
