Holster mods

Post by wvfarrier »

This holster started out as a Galco Phoenix for my N frame 627. Its a pretty nice holster but I noticed that the "taco ends" were coming apart. Apparently they are glued not stitched and the adhesive was letting go. Ive only had it for a couple weeks. So, I decided to do some tinkering. I drilled 3 holes and added T-screw bases on the inside which I then covered back over and restitched. I then stitched the taco ends together as they should have been to begin with. I also added an 8oz piece of shoulder leather behind the belt slot and glued it all together to make it rigid. Now I can use any safariland adapter that I want 😬

All in all it turned out pretty good. I was disappointed that the ends were glued at the factory and not stitched, thats shady for a $175 holster

Glad you could fix it. For that price, I would have expected stitching.

You would think that they would do a perfect job for the big money they want for a holster! Cutting corners is not the way to go when you drop 2 bills on a holster. The holsters that I use are Old West Reproductions and El Paso Saddlery. I really like the El Paso holsters the best so far. I've been using the old school John Wayne style looking Mexican single loop holster for about 12 year's. It's mostly for walking in the wood's and accessional carry with my long Carhart. It's holding up very well! I'll be sure to stay away from Galco holster's

I wore a thigh rig professionally for about 25 years and after a lot of trial and error I found that right about there is the sweet spot for me. Its low enough that I dont have to use a lot of elbow and shoulder rotation to make the draw but high enough to not throw off my gait and to allow me to use most retention techniques.

Those Hollywood gunfighter rigs are too low to wear anywhere. I like the grip and barrel to be high enough to be out of the way when I walk or sit. Too high makes it hard to get out. Shane was one of the only movies I can think of where they knew anything about that.
