Working on the wood pile. (sawmill video added )
We cut down a big popular yesterday that was 22 inch on the butt, most of the wood pile came from that tree.
Hard going with the hip but slowly gettin it done.
Also got this trailer load of dry oak.
Have this left from last year so looking good.
Now want to get some saw logs out for the mill.

Re: Working on the wood pile.
Looks Good You Old Geezer . I have two cords of hard oak under cover that is going on three years old. one Big Black Ash that the Emerald Ash bugs killed to take down .firewood is no fun for Me anymore. just about everything on Me hurts. I will buy three ton of anthracite coal in the next month. If the weather isn't too cold I might make the winter. Stay Strong.

Re: Working on the wood pile.
You've put me to shame Lenn, I ain't got anywhere near enough in for a real cold winter, like .45colt I may have to buy in coal too.
I have got quite a bit of green ash for next year but If I need to you can burn ash even though it's green.

Thanks pards, yea winter wood getting gets harder every year, i like doing it if it just didn`t hurt so much.
I want to fire up the mill once this year yet too, i might be buying a nice commercial planner from a friend so that would be fun.

Good work, Pitchy. That oak will put out some heat on cold nights.

Re: Working on the wood pile.
That big pile of wood really looks good pard. Wish mine were that big but we have a couple of ricks left from last year. Also 80 acres of tops that are dry and just need cutting up left from the logging last year. Too, we have the ground source heat pump that is very efficient. We'll get by.

Re: Working on the wood pile.
Two things in life I really miss: a fireplace and a dog. I used to love putting up my firewood. Poor little Husky chainsaw isn't getting much used here in the desert.
Re: Working on the wood pile.
Thanks Ron and Bill, we just came in from cutting trees cut a real nice Jack pine that made three saw logs for the mill.
The skid way is about full so we`ll have to fire up the mill soon.

Re: Working on the wood pile.
I'd post a pic of my woodpile if I knew how, but have about two winters of seasoned oak ready for the woodstove in my living room.
I'm negotiating with an area logger for a semi load of oak logs for future winters.
Love the wood fires (and a cup of coffee).

Re: Working on the wood pile.
Yes sir, I am sitting pretty good and this is a comfortable feeling when our winters are as long and cold as they are.
I enjoy making wood, always have. I also believe this world would be a better place if everyone had some wood to split.....to work out their anger, anxiety, etc.
Re: Working on the wood pile.
Could be a hard winter this year, have a video coming of sawing a log then the battery went dead in the camera.
Going to saw tomorrow so will make another, first log was a Spruce, hate them pitchy things.
Vid is uploading now.

I was up fishing by Grand Rapids several weeks ago, took a rainy afternoon off and drove over to Walker to check out Reed's (via hwy 200 through Remer).
A bit spendy, but did get to handle a few lever guns there that I hadn't seen for some time.

Re: Working on the wood pile. (sawmill video added )
I got mesmerized just watching that blade chew through that log. Would be real easy to put me under a spell when I'm like that. Sorta like I get when looking into a fire. Read a poem by Edgar Guest yesterday about gazing into the embers. Thanks Lenn.
It really takes me back when watching the mill at Pawnee work belted to a steam tractor. That mill belongs to a neighbor so my boys have tailed it some.

Re: Working on the wood pile. (sawmill video added )
We didn't have trees out on the desert high plains where I grew up. Watching you with that sawmill is so different from what I knew as a kid. It is really cool. What few trees there were happened to be along the river. Mostly cottonwood and a few elm. Elm wood stinks to me. Cottonwood is too soft to be of any use other than for the shade. Once in a while we saw locust trees. The 3 to 5 inch thorns on them were wicked.

how you go about sharpening the blade? I can imagine a nail or two in the tree can give it a fit.

Sharpen using a flat file, if the tooth is damaged to bad it`s replaced, light nails don`t do much damage it`s spikes used for deer stands or cloths line hooks left in trees.

Arnica is a plant, and most pharmacies carry a gel made from it. It seems to work for many different causes of pain.

Lenn, you're VA, so get that hip X-rayed, friend. You might just need a new one. As to pain relief, I use Pain Wizard, which I first heard about here -- I think from DocAJ. It's a good topical. And just for fun, I ordered a bottle of a pain reliever that's been around since about the Mexican War -- Dr. McLean's Voilcanic Oil. I'll give a review shortly.
