1886 Replicas.. which one??

Post by snkbittin »

Morning!... I’m looking into getting an 1886 in 45-70
I’d like to hear if anyone has had good or bad experience with the Winchester 1886 deluxe made in Japan
Or the Taylor & Co 1886 takedown made by Chiappa
Made in Italy
So if you have had a good bad experience with either
I’d love to hear
Thanks!!

Very pleased with my Miroku 1886 .45-90 and the Miroku 1886 45-70 of a friend.
Both are accurate and reliable.

I have a Browning 86 SRC by Miroku in 45-70. It's super nice even compared to my 1916 Winchester 1886 in 45-90. Does the Chiappa have a rebounding hammer like the Miroku/Winchester? I would probably opt for a half cock with no safety. Maybe look for a used Browning?

.

The only thing I know about the Chiappa Model 86/1886 is that they cost a lot more than a Winchester/Miroku Model 86/1886.

I had two Winchester/Miroku Model 86 EL's (Extra Light), a Grade I & a Grade II - both were accurate & very well-fitted.

I bought the Grade I 1st, then a month or so later traded it for the Grade II when the dealer offered me the upgraded gun in trade for my Grade I + $200 - which IMHO was a no-brainer.

Both were factory-prepped (D/T & plugged) for a side-mounted receiver peepsight, although I swapped out the rear barrel sights for a folder and installed a Marble's tang sight that was secured only with the (longer) action tang screw (the sight base concavity matched the tangs convexity, for a solid, non-shifting seating when the tang screw was tightened).

One caveat is that the rebounding hammer can occasionally give light primer strikes - which is easily fixable via slightly shortening the lower/forward leg of the mainspring strut. (my rifles never gave me a problem)

The only other possible caveat that I found was that the factory max COAL is about 2.65", and if the ability to handle longer cartridge length is desired, the chamber throat would need to be deepened somewhat, and the lifter worked on - all of which mods can make cycling of the shorter/normal length cartridges somewhat problematic.

You can buy a like new or even a NIB Browning 1886 (Either 22" SRC or 26" octagon rifle) for less than a new 1886 Winchester.
Both are made by Miroku, but the Browning does not have the tang safety. It does have an inertia firing pin that can sometimes cause problems, but it can be fixed.

I have the Winchester 1886 Deluxe pistol grip take-down made by Miroku. It is an exceptionally fine rifle, but I did have to replace the hammer and trigger with Browning components to eliminate the rebounding hammer, which gave frequent light strikes. Now it fires every time. :D

I have a Miroku/Winchester 1886 Takedown pistol grip with a deleted safety and love it.
I bought a Chiappa new a few years back and from day one it would not feed the second round of any type ammo, the gun shop I bought it from sent it back for repairs after 6 months of being jerked around by both the shop I bought it from and Chiappa's VERY POOR customer service in Ohio I got my money back and moved on.

As for the looks of the Chiappa it was beautiful.

Don't forget to look at a Turnbull 1886. The price differental is worth the upgrade in quality. You dont have to get 45/70. You can go 45/90, 50/110 or 470 Turnbull too.

Your sight choice may be influenced by how you plan to use the rifle.

86er had a receiver mounted peep sight on his Miroku 1886 as it was used for close to medium range hunting.
Being a gunmaker, he then fabricated a QD scout scope for the rifle. When he travelled hunting, he took two receivers sights and scopes to be prepared for loss or breakage.

My 1886 .45-90 TD has a full octagon 26 inch barrel and is fitted with a Marbles folding barrel sight and a Marbles tang mounted folding peep sight.
The two types of sights are good for close range and long range shooting, but the 10 pound weight of the loaded rifle gives a real workout to the stalking hunter.

For those headed for Alaska, Kamchatka, and other worlds like Uranus, Pedersoli offers stainless steel Guidmasters. While I know nothing about them beyond what Pedersoli's web site shows, buy the wood stocked version you might have the fixin's for just about whatever Turnbull can imagine. Of course, I am relying on Pedersoli's excellent reputation for quality control and your inexhaustible pocket book.

Just a thought.
