Good job bud! I'll bet that beats dragging a crosscut or buck any day!

At first I thought you meant a hot saw! That is a real neat set up Pitchy!

Re: Built a drag saw.
Thanks guys, the motor is going to be the hang up if it doesn`t saw, belt slippage or not enough power.
It`s neat none the less.

Re: Built a drag saw.
The Eletric motor should have enough to make the cuts, but as you sat the belts might give you fits. I'm sure you could go to chain drive, just have to find the right sprockets.
Might have to do some fiddling with sprocket sizes to find the best gear reduction.
Pitchy you are a Great inspiration for people to try things! It's great fun to tinker!!

Thanks GunnyMack, that motor doesn`t seem very powerful, I think it`s a 220 motor wired for 115 v.GunnyMack wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2017 5:58 am The Eletric motor should have enough to make the cuts, but as you sat the belts might give you fits. Yep pulley`s is the other problem, both the flywheel and the bigger jackshaft are flat so that`s a issue right there.
Running a serpentine belt on the flywheel, V belt on the other ya gotta have them lined up just right as they're only a inch wide.
I generally try and build things from stuff I have laying around and my pulley supply is real low.
The blade and with all it`s connected too is real heavy so I might try putting a garage door spring on it to help a bit.
Should know something today.

Looks good Lenn. Would be a great place for a hit-n-miss engine? Or I have an extra Harley motor.

Thanks buddy, we just sawed a small popular, it cut it off took 3 minutes but I had to hold up on it a little or it would stop.M. M. Wright wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2017 8:28 am Looks good Lenn. Would be a great place for a hit-n-miss engine? Or I have an extra Harley motor.
Video coming in a bit, it`s a little slow also but it`s a start.
I don`t have and stationary engines anymore and if I had a Harley engine I`d build the wood snowmobile.
We`re going to put a garage door spring on it next to take some weight off the saw.

Re: Built a drag saw.
When I worked in a rock plant They had a tube of belt dressing, sticky anti slip stuff! We would peel off the wrapping and let the belt rub on the stuff. Worked pretty good at keeping the belts from slipping. Maybe they have some of that in you part of the country ?

Yep belt dressing, I don`t have any right now and I`m not sure how it will work on the rubber belts but will try it.Bronco wrote: ↑Sun Jul 23, 2017 10:08 am When I worked in a rock plant They had a tube of belt dressing, sticky anti slip stuff! If the motor is too small you're better off letting the belt slip! It wont take long to burn up a motor that's too small if it gets bogged down and the belt doesn't slip.

Re: Built a drag saw.
We see a lot of the gas-powered antique drag saws here in Oregon, where so much timber was cut back in the day. Slow but sure. Yours looks swell, Pitchy.
Re: Built a drag saw.
Thanks guys, Bill I`ve had a couple of those saws like your talking about wish I`d kept them.
Ok we geared it up a little and it saws a little faster, I may search for another motor this motor is really noisy.
Maybe a one HP that's made just for 115 v.
Vid got blurry for who knows what reason.

Re: Built a drag saw.
Greetings
That looks fine from down here in LLama Land ! A bit of tweeking and it should cut right along. Home built is an adventure.
Grew up in SW Michigan and that looks similar to a saw rig a neighbor had out at his place. But he had some kind of "motor" on it that burned a fuel.
There is a "steam show" out in West Indiana . They have a wood cutting rig that works off the flywheel of one of those big old steam tractors.

Mighty impressive stuff Pitchy.
I wouldn't worry about the speed, it's safe and you can walk away from it to do other stuff.

Re: Built a drag saw.
Looking good Lenn. That would be way faster for me. I'd have to stop and take a break about every 30 seconds
Then I'd remember there was something else I had to do......then I'd think how good a cold beer would taste.......then I'd have to take a leak.......probably should see about lunch.

Thanks there`s nothing like old ways, just satisfying to watch it go, if I run across some better pulleys ect I`ll hop it up a little.

Re: Built a drag saw.
Todays video of the drag saw, it`s working good and probably sawed five coed of wood so far.
Got a new drag saw blade fore it which works great and to day made a lifting device to help move the log down for the next cut.
Been fun getting up wood with less work than using the chain saw, cut and dragged in another six trees this morning.

Pretty good pile bud!
Good thinking! Many don't realize how the dirt on the wood can dull a saw.
If I tipped the ground with the chainsaw, my ole man would give me what for when I was a kid. But, it worked. I'm still careful.
