OK, maybe some of you will call it blasphemy, but here is what I did to make what are for me improvements to my recently acquired 1948 vintage pre-Microgroove Marlin 39A lever action .22;
I do not like the pregnant look of the original forearm, and being a big fan of checkering, I replaced both the forearm and buttstock with some nice current production wood that I purchased from Jdad on this forum.
Since the rifle will be used for NRA Cowboy Smallbore Silhouette shooting, I removed the original sights and installed a Marble's tang sight and a Lyman 17A globe front sight. Next came a softer mainspring and a light polishing of action parts to get a lighter trigger pull. The modifications were mainly cosmetic so I can return the rifle back to original if desired. Here are some before & after pictures:
It shoots very well and will make a good backup gun for my main rifle, a 1955 vintage 39A that is a twin to this rifle.

Not blasphemy at all, I did the exact same thing to my rifle of about the same vintage, got the stocks from Numrich. Many, many steel critters have given their all at the hands of this gun, and many more to come.
You turned a 'classic, but definitely utilitarian, fairly decent shooter' into a 'classic, beautiful, and more functional, precision shooter'.....nothing bad about that....!
