Nice 81 Pitchy! Were they popular out there? They were quite popular here, especially in .35.
I was always surprised how few people realized they took stripper clips. Still one of the best inventions ever to load a rifle.
The .35 is still popular here. Lot of 336's chambered as such.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

Not sure how popular they were around here, the 35 was a good brush buster.
I`d like to have the model eight also.
I have a 336 in that cal. too

Still run into both 8's and 81's here. Most are well used but still in good working order. A very robust design.
The tang sight is a great addition Pitchy.
There are 14 and 141's kicking around up here too. Most I see tend to look less "used" than the autos. Kinda strange.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.
I've had several 8s and 81s over the years, but only one in .35 Remington. Never did find one in .25 that was in good enough shape to justify the asking price. There is something about this design that is timeless. I am amazed how often they show up in old black and white deer camp photos. Same goes for the old Auto 5 in duck hunting photos. Folks took to them as soon as they hit the gun shop shelves.
Thanks guys, it`s a neat rifle, I have a picture somewhere that Norma took from off side front showing the barrel recoiled.
Also have a picture of a old cowboy maybe a TX ranger with a eight in his scabbard but can`t find it either.
I`m looking.

That's a nice rifle Lenn. I found myself looking at them while at the Wanamacher the other day. Always kinda wanted one. I bought a couple of Colts so there went all my money.

I didn't realize they used stripper clips either. Thanks
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres
250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!
Thanks guys, Nam vintage clips work in them and are a dime a dozen, original clips are spendy.
Nice picture of your rifle and deer olskool
MM I`d give up getting one of these for what you got any day.
I have those picture I was talking about on my desk top but I can`t find them in PB

I wish someone still did the Krieger-type modification to the magazine. Wouldn't a 15 shot 35 Remington be a lot of fun ?
I think the tang sights look terrific, but I just can't find a comfortable place to put my thumb when using a rifle that has one.
Do you know if those stripper clips would work in 81's chambered in 300 Savage?
Why are the freshly ejected empties from these rifles so hot; absolutely blazing ? (At least that has been my observation based on 4 Model 8's / 81's, in 3 different chamberings).
After looking at the fellar on horse back I see it says, Texas Ranger C R Runyun.

The little dachshund does not appear to be fazed by gunfire
That would be our long lost Snoopy dog, shootin didn`t bother him at all.
I`m not sure about the stripper clips as I`ve only owned this one 81 in 35 .
I don`t recall if the empties were hot, sorry, I`ll have to get it out for a few shots.

Pitchy......been metal detecting the last few days......finding junk and more junk....anyway, never knew you had one of those rifles........and like others have said, I also never thought about the stripper clips as I've never seen it done.
That's a rifle that is seldom encountered in Pa as semi's never have been legal for hunting. Do you load for the 35 R. ? Let me know, I'll send ya up some gas checked bullets for cheaper shooting.---6
Well heck ya I`ve been wondering what happened to ya, have ya found me a cannon ball yet.
Yep I do reload for the 35, haven`t for quite some time as haven`t been shooting much.
Going to shoot it today after it warms up so watch for a vid latter.

Copy that Pitchy........will get you some cast gas checked bullets.
As for cannonballs, there are still pleanty of them in the ground from the Revolution. The Brandywine Battlefield is only a few miles down the road but the bigger battle actually took place a few miles from there. I go past it all the time but.......the land is owned by richy rich people who frown upon peons like me who dig holes. My wife's cousins used to live across from this battlefireld and have found many cannonballs just by eyeballing them on the surface. That was in the fifties and sixties when it was acceptable to walk on other people's land. Times a change ya know.----6
I didn't know about the stripper clips. I have only handled 1 model 8. It was really nice. The model 81 seems a little wider at the fore end than I remember the model 8 being.

Are you using the M14 stripper clips?
If I'm not mistaken, the 8/81 is cut for 1903 clips. If that is the case, yes, as you said above they are harder to get and spendy.
The best substitute is Swedish Mauser clips. They are cheap, in good supply, and excellent quality. I use them in my 1903A3.
I bought 400 all boxed and sealed in a rubber bag from Sarco a couple years ago for 80 bucks.

Nice line up Wildgoose, very nice.
