Favorite Fancy Knife
So, the thread on using knives got me to thinking. What is your favorite fancy knife?

Managed to put a pretty nice edge on it with the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Mostly used the coarse rods, took hours.

Re: Favorite Fancy Knife
Late to the party as usual. My favorite knife today is the last one I made. I started this one last November but things got in the way and it sat on the back burner until a month ago.
It came out pretty nice,I would say. Folders are much more difficult to make than a Fixed blade, for me at least.
My design,my pattern, totally from bar stock, heat treat done by Texas Knife supply. Rosewood scales.

Thanks guys! I try to make every one better than the one before it.
Marlinmans knife is just plain sweet also. That one would make a fine caper/ small game knife.
Not that you cant do bigger game with a small knife mind you, I carry a 2-3" blade for all large game
And never have wished it was larger.

Yes Griff, that is Darth Vader! I had a heck of a time getting that to scale down enough to engrave it. Don't know exactly what that stainless bolster is but it was hell on my gravers!

Camp daddy- if you want your guide gun BLACK, strip it down to bare wood and then apply a wood dye. It will do a better job then stain. Try a wood worker supply house( woodcraft) for the dye.

Re: Favorite Fancy Knife
One of my favorites. The 1/4"-thick Damascus steel blank (with 7" cutting edge) was hand-forged by Clint Chisan up in Canada. Dan Koster then created the knife as a custom for me. I chose teak for the handle and Dan did the rest. I've used it a bit to chop some small limbs, takes and holds a superbly sharp edge. Excellent balance.

Thanks. Any recommendation for a stripper that will really get in there and really go to work on the original finish? I don't want to have to sand on it and risk messing up the checkering.GunnyMack wrote:Camp daddy- if you want your guide gun BLACK, strip it down to bare wood and then apply a wood dye. Re: Favorite Fancy Knife
Camp daddy,
I'm not sure what finish Marlin uses but it is going it is going to take some elbow grease to get to bare wood. You could try a commercial stripper, a cabinet scraper will help.
Another thought, try to find an UNFINISHED set from Boyd's. This way the original wood can stay untouched.

I really like this idea. I've always liked the feel of the thinner forearm on Winchesters compared to the chubby Marlin forearms. Starting from scratch would be a nice way to go about getting that same feel. May go with a laminate for the added strength and hollow out the butt enough to get the balance right.GunnyMack wrote:I just looked at Boyd's, they have 1895GS stocks, $65, unfinished add another 10 bucks...

I have used quite a few of their stocks, good stuff. Cost of new vs labor to strip & refinish yours is a no brainer , and you can modify anyway you want!
Put one of their thumb holes on a guy's savage slug gun, bedded it, floated it and he tells me it shoots 1 hole groups now! Guess I should do mine too!

Re: Favorite Fancy Knife
nutin'fancy about this knife, the ad for it is on ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1990-A-G-RUSSEL ... 2564684711
My Dad gave one to my brother when he shipped to that gulf as part of, (IIRC), the Eisenhower task force. My brother carried it on deck watch. Figured if he saw any fingers grasping the rail they would be his.
Then my Dad passed away, and for some reason years later my brother inquired as to whether I would like to have his knife. So I do.
There is absolutely nothing fancy about the knife. It is a blue-collar fighting bowie with the guard molded into the plastic handle. It lives in the blue-collar pack that lives in my car when I'm in it. It is the least fancy knife on this thread. But everything else I have pales in comparison.
It is so obscure that I can't find a picture of it online. Still looking.
it's the center one where the cursor is. nutin' fancy. but it carries its memories well.

Another of my favorites, this one from a fellow in Michigan. About 1/4" thick, about 7" of cutting edge, a birdseye maple handle. Superb heat treat: I managed to put a tiny "bend" in the edge and the edge did not crack/facture. A fantastic chopper.

Re: Favorite Fancy Knife
don't have a fancy knife I guess. I thought this Morseth was fancy when I bought it at the downtown hardware store in Juneau. Still like the ivory micarta a lot. Not too fond of the laminated blade shape, but it disassembled innumerable deer over many years with no complaints. Another blue collar utility I guess, in his homely way.
this second one is a more recent Mora laminated steel blade. the design is at least a thousand years old and it contributed to lots of boat building, meat carving, killing, etc., back in that day. to this day if you look at Scandinavian boat building sites, especially ones building the ancient designs, you will see this carried by the carpenters. I positioned the sheath upside down to show the old school way they made them.
something I discovered while reading about Morseth is that he imported his laminated blades from somewhere in Scandinavia and finished them in his shop in Alaska. Notice that his knife doesn't have the "scandi" grind. The scandi knives have a more delicate edge, a good reason to have a thin hard steel on the edge and tougher steel cladding it. but, they're still relatively delicate when using them as industrial utility tools. by this I mean they like more frequent stropping than the edge on Moreseth's blade. Although I've never done woodworking with his knife, and I've never butchered meat with the antique design.

Re: Favorite Fancy Knife
how about another one ..... This one made by Robert Hankins, he called it The Bear Slayer. 1/4" 5160 steel, 10" cutting length. As best I know, Hankins only made 4 of these around 2003 and I am truly privileged to have one. Beautiful lines, great balance, it really gets the job done.
