Not a lever but still a 45/70

Post by Goat »

Boss was in a bind for $ to buy a new truck and mentioned he had a few guns to sell. I got a H&R single shot 45/70 that had never been fired with a cheap 3-9x 40 scope for $200. Not a steal but a decent buy. My home state of Louisiana is considering legislation that would make this a legal firearm for or black powder season. I just have to decide if I want to keep it for this or find it a new home. This gun is VERY light and I am certain that recoil will be severe to put it mildly. I already have a Guide Gun in 45/70 so I really do not need another for regular fire arms season. Maybe I could get another barrel in a different caliber...

Nice find.

If you keep the load at sane levels the recoil is fine. Its when people try to load them the same as there Marlin is when things get uncomfortable.
That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error.

Well you could rechamber the H&R 45-70 to 45-110 8) .

It is funny about perceptions. I don't consider the H&R break-open .45-70s to be light. I also don't think they kick badly at all. My Contender carbine only weighs much less and it isn't all that bad, once you get used to it.
Sincerely,

Hobie

If you are going to get another barrel, you better call H&R/NEF first. Since Remington bought Marlin which owns H&R/NEF, they (Remington) are closing the plant and moving it. I can't remember where right now, senior moments :) .
when your enemy is within range so are you

I just got the extra barrels I ordered on Friday. I put the order in early February.
