MY Father's Model 71 Winchester
Hi All, My first post! I inherited my father's Win 71, I remember the recoil being fairly stiff, I am wanting to load it down to make it fun to shoot at the range, I will probably not hunt with this rifle just punch paper, I have seen the RCBS 200 gr. FNGC mold and I am a caster, but I have not been able to find any load data, my new Lyman Cast bullet manual does not list the .348 and my old one only lists obsolete Lyman lead bullets, can anyone help me with some cast bullet data for this cartridge!
Thanks, Marshhawk

I can't help you out with the data, but we'd sure like to see some pics of your rifle.

Carefully research "The Load". It used a reduced charge of Red Dot, and was researched by Ed Harris. I've never heard of anybody getting into trouble with this if the recipe is precisely followed. Other reduced loads are no doubt safe and sane, as well.

Re: MY Father's Model 71 Winchester
The Lyman cast bullet handbook shows 2 bullet weights, 187, and 255. They also only show 4 powders. Very limited information really. The powders listed are 2400, and IMR powders 4227,4198, and 3031.
I would have thought there was more data for it than that. It's the first time I ever looked it up.

Re: MY Father's Model 71 Winchester
Welcome to tHe forum! 2400 or Trail Boss.
Starting loads 2400-14 gr. Tail Boss -13 gr. work up until desired accuracy is achieved.
Have fun!
Red Dot is another good one for reduced velocity cast bullet loads as are several other powders such as
4227.
I believe you would be quite safe using starting load data for the .38-55 200 gr. cast bullet.

Go to http://www.accuratepowder.com/load-data/ click on the #5 load data it will download to your document file then open it find 348, I use aa5744 for a light load it isnt position sensitive and you dont use a filler to take up space. danny

A .350" round ball (available commercially from Hornady), lubed with Lee Liquid Alox, with 4 grs Red Dot or Unique makes a nice small game/snake/grouse/fun in the yard load. Its about as loud as a 22, and doesnt tear up small game.
I use a touch of dacron pillow stuffing with the Unique, it helps with ignition consistency and shooting at different angles. I understand Red Dot doesnt need this but I havent used the Red Dot much yet.

Re: MY Father's Model 71 Winchester
Just a thought, and I have very few of them! The year my Dad died, I hunted the first day with my new whatever the heck I had at the time. I saw nothing, so ok the next day I thought I would take Dads old 1917 out for a walk and had the opportunity to take a doe that almost begged my to shoot her. It was a day that I will remember until I see Dad again...you might just want to take it for a hunt or two it's amazing all the memories that piece of steel and wood will bring back to you......and all of them are good memories..
Just my opinion and worth exactly what you paid for it...but it is good opinion. Welcome to the fire enjoy the guys around here A bunch of good info and some of the greatest guys you'll ever meet. Tom

Re: MY Father's Model 71 Winchester
Depends on how light you want to go. I personally don't care for mouse fanny burbs. 28grs of 4198 (either) with the RCBS bullet was one of my favorites for smacking rock chucks. I gave up on chucks by the time 5744 became available again so no experience with it but suspect it would do well. Because I never knew when I was going to be pointing radically up or down I did use a Fed 215 mag primer with the 4198 load which helped consistency whether the powder was at one end or the other in the case.

Re: MY Father's Model 71 Winchester
I use 3031 with the 200gr RCBS and run them at about 2000fps. Really great accuracy and recoil is very manageable.

Heh, I have been trying not to succumb to Model 71 fever the past few days.
In the process, I ran across this fine article by our own Rev. Jim Taylor right here on Leverguns.
