I know about some lever gun butt plates like the carbine style, the crescent style, but what confuses me is the shot gun style and some of the others I've seen pics of over the years.
Is there a pictorial somewhere that identifies the different types of butt plates and what types of lever guns they'd normally be found on and perhaps when?
If this has been covered before, who cares? We're a bit stagnant around here lately.

Well, here's two 1873 rifles, a 44-40 with a standard crescent butt, and two pics of a 38-40 with a special order shotgun butt. I guess some guys liked the wider shotgun butt better.

Joe, I have never seen them called anything other than ...
shotgun...flatter and wider than ..
rifle...crescent shaped and narrower than shotgun..
Carbine...usually wider than rifle, shorter, top to bottom and with less curve than rifle..
And target type with those long hooks to go under the arm pit to keep it in place at the shoulder.
I guess they could have other names too. How about George or Rudy?
I've got a couple different types as used on Winchester 94 carbines. Will dig out some tomorrow and take pictures for your entertainment and enlightenment. Will also include a couple different hammer knurling types. Been busy all day or would have done so earlier. Les

Okay guys, here's some buttplates from my collection, to illustrate Wwinchester 1894 and 1892 types and some changes in production years. The first is the rifle or crescent.

Here's proof that Bubba had a grandpaw.. On an otherwise correct but beat to stuff saddle ring carbine from 1898. The two incorrect items are both in the picture, the ancient rubber pad and the sling swivel stud. The gun had laid in a lake for some time, and has no finish/rifling, but needed a good home.
