4 gun Monte...

Post by Old Ironsights »

Something I never tried before (dunno why) but did today...

Put 4 handguns on a table with a safe target across the room.
Closed eyes and snatched one of the 4.... then looked at the hand/grip placement/sight alignment.

My SP101 was dead square, but barrel/sight High (high POI)
My Guardian was vertically correct, but wide Right.
My new 999 Siggyish matched the Guardian. Center Right... waay Right.

Only my 1858 was dead-nutz-on... every time.

Weird how proper biomechanics work...even if you don't know what "bio-mechanics" are when you design your handgun...

(gotta get a 1911 in the mix next time... IIRC all of my 1911s always were "sights on" for a blind grab...)

But, in short, I believe I have the right Gun on my Bedside... Because if I had to take any gun in a " 'condition-1' snatch & shoot" for 1st-shot accuracy, it would be my 1858...

Colt peacemakers and my 1851 are always that way so are smith j frames, though I can't remember a jframe I didn't have to tweak the front sight to get it that way

The mdl 65 S&W w/4" bbl is my "natural pointer". But it's a real close thing between it, a 1911 & a SAA Colt. But, I don't really think that how a handgun comes up to sight alignment makes it the ideal "snatch and shoot" pistol... it's more about how it naturally points to where you're looking, whether it's from a low ready, a high ready or actually over the sights.

What I found particularly interesting is that both the Micro DAO Guardian and the Fat Grip 999 blindly point Right. I would expect that from a large-grip firearm like the 999/226/M92 etc from the natural inclination to get more finger into the trigger. But with the NAA Guardian, that is not an issue, so why it too would be a right-pointer is odd.

It's mostly in muscle memory... and your natural tendency to grip most anything in the same manner. The shape of your palm is also a factor...

For me that would be the 1851 and early 1st gen colt grips frames.

Pretty much ANY SAA points properly for me. My FA Casull was another treat to shoot...

Anyway, it's an interesting experiment to try with a table full of your favorite handguns...

I have done this quite a bit. The 1911 is invariably pointing a bit low. The Glock 20 gen 4 in 10mm is perfect, as is the Python.

Does your 1911 have a flat mainspring housing?

The Army found most guys point-shooting 1911s in trench warfare during WW1 and hitting low.

They changed to the A1 arched housing to counteract that, it made most people point the 1911 and hit closer to what they were aiming at.

We all know these days to use the sights, etc but back then, they understood that with the tiny sights on the 1911 then, in the dark, in a muddy foxhole or trench, most guys would just point.
