Forming die help

Post by Walker »

I picked this up recently and was wondering if one of you learned gentlemen could tell me what the plug on the left is (the one with the hollow tip).

Top part looks ground down, possibly a custom tool? It's from an Alaskan gunsmith's estate.

Looks like it's tapered for expanding the neck up .50 from .348 diameter.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

I have to agree that it looks like the neck expander.

Yep, I'm pretty sure that's what it is. A mic will tell you for sure.

Interesting, as the set has expanders from 348 to 40, 40 to 45, and 40 to 50; all with smaller heads and shafts with rounded tips. Need a new battery in my micrometer. I'll measure after lunch.

Thanks guys,

tw

Perhaps someone thought they could save time by making the expansion in one pass. I'd expect that would not work well....

Late update, that plug tapers from .332 up to .462 and for the last half inch stays around .463. Guess it'll stay unused in that set as it already has all that's needed.

Thanks guys,

Terry
