cleaning minor powder marks from nickel firearm

Post by Streetstar »

just as the post says --- my Colt Lawman (nickel) has been fired 2 cylinder fulls since i bought it and now its time to at least clean the powder residue from the front of the cylinder and barrel crown

Any ideas on a cleaner that is not harmful to the nickel and is non abrasive?

Give a try with a regular pink end of the pencil eraser. Also may want to check the instructions on a lead away cloth, not sure if they are good to go with nickel plate but they seem to work fine with electroless nickel.

I use Corrosion Technologies, Corrosion X to clean all of my firearms. I also use it to lube'em as well. IMO good stuff.

Hoppes No 9 work fairly well. It wont hurt nickel if you dont leave it soaking for long periods in it. I used it quite a lot on several nickel guns without incident.

The cylinders on our SS Vaquero's were getting pretty grungy until I ran some BP rounds thru 'em then after normal cleaning they were shiny again, is that why people refer to it as Holy Black?

I use a little Flitz on a paper towel on my stainless and nickle revolver cylinders.

The other side of that is don't leave the cylinder soak in no 9 for any period of time. It can cause the nickle to flake off. I have heard some say that a nickle gun that takes on a milky look can sometimes be blamed on the over application of no 9.
