You'd be amazed how fast they start. We use smaller ones in the nukes as back up power, 24 cylinders can't remember piston size.
They're almost the same units used in ships for electric power.
Air start and turbocharged and two per unit, one for each essential electrical system.
By procedure, when all offsite power sources are lost, they have to start and supply power to essential pumps etc within less than 20 seconds.
Every refuel we test them by shutting down each essential system one at a time in four different modes and letting the diesel pick it back up. Never had a failure.
The reason Fukushima melted was they put their diesels in the cellar and they flooded out when the water came in. Dumb. That's not allowed here.

IIRC several years ago I did some calculations on those engines performance and they consume 18,000 gal of heavy fuel oil (super super dirty) per hour at optimum operating conditions. And the EPA puts restrictions on my diesel pickup that took over 200K miles to use that much clean diesel fuel.
