.35 Rem in a Marlin 336 Questions
I have been looking for a .375 Win for a while now, but haven't seen any that were worth the money. Then I went with the idea of a 38-55 and handloading up to near 375 levels, but I really think there is a reason that Marlin says the action isn't strong enough for that.
Then I started looking at the 356, 358 cartridges in the reloading manuals, as opposed to the 35 rem and the 38-55, 375. What I found was interesting, that I am about 250 fps from the 375 with 220gr vs. the 35rem same weight.
Then with the new Levervolution powder and the poly-pointed tips, I could probably handload to just about the same with the 35rem as almost all of the others and keep it under max pressures.
I also would gain using the 357 and 9mm rounds for fun reloading and plinking.
Any input would be great,
Steve

Re: .35 Rem in a Marlin 336 Questions
Steve,
I hunt bears and moose with my Winchester 356 AE with a Leupold scope. I use a Speer Hot Core 220 Gr. bullet.
It is very accurate and good out to 200 yards plus. Killed a bear at 150 yards one shot dead bear. I like the .358
really well. I think you should be careful about trying to load a 38-55 up to higher pressures, it just wasn't meant
for that.

Re: .35 Rem in a Marlin 336 Questions
A modern Marlin 336 in proper working order can handle the Speer 220gr Hot Core at 2200FPS, adjusted muzzle velocity from a 20" barrel. I use H4895 and Rem cases. It should be no mean feat to achieve 2200FPS, assuming a 20" or longer barrel, with a 220gr projectile in a modern rifle chambered in .38-55. 1886.

Re: .35 Rem in a Marlin 336 Questions
I agree the 35 Rem. is more versatile than the 38-55.......and .....much easier to load for as the tolerences are very uniform.....just about anything you stick in it will shoot accurately......including cheap lead pistol bullets. I would go the extra mile and get a Ballard rifled Marlin or a Remington pump of some sort.
I'm headed to an auction tonight and in the bunch is a NIB Winchester XTR .375. If I can snag it at a decent price, it will come home with me.-------6

Re: .35 Rem in a Marlin 336 Questions
IIRC Paco did an article on the .35 Rem, or it might have been a chapter in his book. He stated that it can be hand loaded to even better levels than what the factories produce.
I worked with a guy that shot a Marlin .35 Rem all the time. He says it hits like Thor's hammer.

I hope I am not taking this thread in a direction you did not intend to go.... The Rem 7600 chambered in the .35 Rem. is on my someday, short list. 1886.

Re: .35 Rem in a Marlin 336 Questions
Thank you all for the quick replies
I was thinking that reloading the 35 rem, would be the way to go. Especially with all the bullet choices.
Good luck on that 375, 6!! It will have a good home at your house.
1886, My father had a 760 in 3006, and that thought crossed my mind, properly loaded 35 rem, could easily reach 356Win levels.
Keep the ideas coming,
Steve

I don't see where "modern" Marlin 336 is defined. Would a 1951 336 fit the bill?1886 wrote:A modern Marlin 336 in proper working order can handle the Speer 220gr Hot Core at 2200FPS, adjusted muzzle velocity from a 20" barrel. Re: .35 Rem in a Marlin 336 Questions
Steve,
I was telling my bud that I was interested in the 375 and for him to stay off of it......and he pointed out to me, "yo, the stock has been cut".
And a sloppy job it was......Man! I'm slippin'. I was so disgusted with myself, I never stayed around to see what it went for. Ahhhh...most everything there was mostly junky foreign military guns anyway, the place was packed, no where to sit, the outside temps were 15 degrees..... Good excuse to hit the road.-------6

Re: .35 Rem in a Marlin 336 Questions
I would not "push" a Marlin manufactured in 1951. I have an older 336 Texan .35 Rem. that I do not push. A 200gr round nose projectile at 2000-2100FPS is pretty decisive. Marlin reintroduced the model 1895 chambered in the .45-70 sometime in 1972. The heat treating of the receiver and certain action parts was changed at that time in order to accommodate the larger .45-70 cartridge. I hope this helps. 1886.Bullard4075 wrote:I don't see where "modern" Marlin 336 is defined. Yes, it is!A 200gr round nose projectile at 2000-2100FPS is pretty decisive.
Within it's limitations, the 35 Remington is a terrific cartridge.
It's not a 600 yard round. In the continental US, it's good for just about
anything within 150 yards. (As the late Jeff Cooper opined, closer
is better.) Grizzly might be the exception, and were I hunting the big
bears in Alaska, I'd want something bigger. Much bigger......
Some of the modern bullets are terrific, and the Leverution stuff may,
indeed, gain one some velocity. The 200 gr. Remington CoreLokt is
still a wonderful bullet though, and will do anything needing doing within the
cartridge's aforementioned limitations.

Re: .35 Rem in a Marlin 336 Questions
6,
too bad about the 375, they are tough to find that are worth the money. I do like those old mosin nagants, especially the Finn-ed ones.
I think with all said, that a 35 rem will be coming home to me in the near future.
Thanks all.

Re: .35 Rem in a Marlin 336 Questions
I have a Winchester 94 375 I would be willing to part with if the price was right. It appears new, I bought it NIB a few years ago, have shot it
only a few times. It is beautiful, no scratches and one of the things I like about it is there is no safety on it, no tang or cross bolt safety.
If you are interested e-mail me at daisygordon@comcast.net and we could talk about price.

Re: .35 Rem in a Marlin 336 Questions
Just looked at a 35Rem and a 32Win Marlin 336 yesterday. The 32 was about 50-60% metal, all honest no damage. $459.
The 35Rem was a '50s gun, smooth stocks of course - better finish but had a couple chunks and cuts in the forearm and stock. $679.
This is a decent shop with realistic, cash-only pricing. Apparently desireable guns!
I have the Win 356 Big Bore for all-around "big game". It's accurate and with the tipped Hornady bullets it is a bonafide 200+yd thumper.

Thanks, I think the days of 350.00 and lower a long gone. I do kick myself for not grabbing a few when the prices were a lot lower, I always thought nobody wanted them old leveractions, guess I am wrong!!mohavesam wrote:Just looked at a 35Rem and a 32Win Marlin 336 yesterday.
