Number 6 Arrived! And it's PRETTY! Pcture... gorgeous!!!!
I was sorta jokin', when I told the candy store owner to "...have 'em pick out a nice one!" Apparently he wasn't when he passed along that request!
Uberti 1873 from Taylor's & Sons, 18" ½round/octagon barrel... straight grip - and my 6th rifle in 45 Colt!
Box:
Overall view of the innards: (ain't I a tease?)
OK, enough already...
Took 'er out behind the barn... and fired a couple of my handloads... both went bang... Both shots whacked the dead ol' tree out at the pasture fence... 'bout 75 yards... Can't wait until I get home in January and put it on paper! Sights are reminiscent of the early Winchester 94 sights... Bone stock, and not much other a little smoothin' out planned... maybe some "Whisper" springs...

You did real nice with that one. Wood is just beautiful as well as the case coloring. Hope it shoots as nice as it looks

I'm a HUGE fan of the half/half......very unique. You don't see many at the CAS shoots.
Good luck with it!

Since I've never settled on just "ONE" load for the 45 Colt, those handloads were 6.5 grains of RedDot behind a 200 RFN, WLP primers and in this case, a Starline and a R-P case. Over the past 36 years I've purchased Winchester, Starline, TopBrass & Remington-Peters cases new, and picked up, (er, had handed to me), at matches such things as CBC (?), Federal, and a couple of others I can't think of.fordwannabe wrote:Don't mean to hijack the thread but Griff what do you use as a handload? VERY nice Griff. That is a great configuration. Most like that are pistol grip. I MUCH prefer the straight.

Out of curiosity do you have to do any action/cosmetic mods or is it range ready?

I was actually going to get the PG, but Taylor's was out and the Cimarron was a couple hundred more... All my other cowboy guns are straight grip, rifle configurations, sooo... This was easy.OldWin wrote:VERY nice Griff. That is a great configuration. Most like that are pistol grip. I MUCH prefer the straight.

Griff,
That's a gorgeous rifle. They picked you out a good one for sure.
But .... why the short stumpy barrel?

Thank you. It'll hold 10 rounds... the usual # of rounds on a cowboy stage, & kinda wanted a "carbine", but prefer a rifle configuration. Also, it's easier to maneuver around "window" uprights, thru doors etc.J Miller wrote:Griff,

I love it! Now maybe some Whisper springs, a short stroke kit and an aluminum lifter. Gotta compete with the gamers you know. Make mine a 44-40 though, just 'cause. And my SASS rifle has a Marbles tang site on it. Throw away the insert and shoot through the threads. Maybe I should have said aim instead of shoot. You get the idea though. Again, I love it!

Griff, really like that short stubby version of the '73. What does it weigh?
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Website sez 7.39 lbs. But it sez the same for the PG version. I'll weigh when I get home.3leggedturtle wrote:Griff, really like that short stubby version of the '73. What does it weigh?

Well done, Griff.
VERY nice.
VERY nice.

Now, you all know I'm not a big fan of rifles made by relatives of mine but........dang, that one struck a note......short rifle with rd/oct.
Nice wood.......my relatives are getting good on the fit, finish, and overall look.
Nice one Griff.....can I have it?

Yeah I understand about the Italian made clones... And they did do a good job with this'un... But, they definitely outdo the Brazilians! As for the twist, I didn't measure... but lookin' down the bore... it sure seems like it might make a full turn in the less than 18" of rifling available. I hope the weather holds when I get home and I can run some rounds thru it. I found another batch of old 250 grain Keith-style SWCs that I'll give a try as a single shot to check accuracy... as I don't hold much hope for them feeding thru the action! I'll stick with my RFN & TC styles for action shooting!Sixgun wrote:Now, you all know I'm not a big fan of rifles made by relatives of mine but........dang, that one struck a note......short rifle with rd/oct.

No. Not because I'm opposed to 'em... but because none of my other rifles are so equipped. Changin' back & forth between guns would really mess with my mediocre abilities...RIHMFIRE wrote:very nice! ya gonna put a short throw kit in it?

Thanks for that load Griff. I acquired a Uberti SAA clone and a Winchester 94 end of trail model recently and am looking for a load so all suggestions are welcomed. I have a box of 250gr RFN sized at 452 so hoping to be able to use those. Really nice rifle you got there, even if sixguns relatives touched it.

Now if you buy one of those spaghetti guns in a Model 1876 in the 50-95 cartridge you just might get me thinking !Griff wrote:Yeah I understand about the Italian made clones...
